Murjāņi is located on the Loja and near the Gauja. The Loja is 26 km long and is known for its numerous sandstone cliffs, where remains of armoured fish have been found. The Ziedonis Museum complex is another specific destination in Murjāņi.
Hiking along the Loja and Gauja
On the 6 km hiking route through Murjāņi, you can observe the changing banks of the Loja, as well as sandstone cliffs and caves. Different landscape features therefore come together along this stretch of the Loja.
If you consider the longer course, a hike along the Gauja leads to Murjāņi. On the Murjāņi–Sigulda section, there is a rest area at the point where the Loja flows into the Gauja. The confluence is the place where the Loja flows into the Gauja. This section is 36 km long. The 6 km route through Murjāņi should be considered separately and offers picnic opportunities by the Loja or the Gauja. The 26 km, in turn, refers to the Loja as a river. Thus, the choice of route involves a local route, a longer section and a river length, each with its own meaning. Anyone planning the route through the area should therefore not use the 36 km length of the Murjāņi–Sigulda section as the basis.
What cultural and family attractions are there?
The Ziedonis Museum complex provides a cultural focal point alongside the river and hiking landscapes. The museum complex includes a children’s adventure house called Fuņa, created in 2023. If you are travelling with children, you can combine your museum visit with this place created specifically for children.
Which traces of history are still visible?
In the lower reaches of the Loja, that is, in the downstream part of the river, there is a deep ravine near Murjāņi. Remains of the former luge track have also been preserved on the steep banks of the Loja. It was built in 1978 as a training track for Murjāņi Sports School. The facility is therefore part of the area’s history and should not be planned as a current luge track.
