Jaunmuiža – Nature, Water and History

Jaunmuiža combines striking landscapes, water experiences and regional history. Between the Gobdziņi Cliffs, the Venta and paths through the surrounding area, you will find various reasons to explore the place and its surroundings.

Key facts about Jaunmuiža

The Gobdziņi Cliffs form an almost continuous wall, approximately 400 m long, made of cemented sandstone and dolomite from the Šķerveļa layers. From there, you can enjoy views of the Venta and its valley, as well as the rock outcrop Ātrais kalns. The “Ventas and Šķerveļa Valley” Nature Reserve protects sections of the Venta Valley and its tributary, the Šķerveļa.

What water activities are documented?

In Skrunda Parish, the “Gobdziņi” recreation area and boat rental service are located on the banks of the Venta and within the “Ventas and Šķerveļa Valley” Nature Reserve. There, you can rent canoes and kayaks for trips on the Venta; pre-planned paddling routes are also available. Thus, both a specific boat rental service and various forms of river trips are described.

The Šķerveļa stream is considered a somewhat faster and more adrenaline-filled paddling route, with relatively high banks and winding sections; it flows into the Venta. The Ciecere River also flows into the Venta and is considered an adventurous route with picturesque surroundings. Occasional obstacles there include fallen trees as well as shallow, rocky sections.

Which paths and regional connections are important?

For walks, the hiking trail along the Venta in Skrunda is another option. It has benches, rest and campfire areas, several viewpoints and a sensory trail. Various creative sports activities take place regularly in Jaunmuiža.
