Mērsrags – Accommodation for Beaches, Nature and Culture

Mērsrags is located in Engures ezera dabas parks Nature Park. The nearby area includes the several-kilometer-long sandy beach of Mērsraga pludmale, which is suitable for swimming and sunbathing. The harbor of Mērsrags provides a sheltered harbor area in an artificially constructed entrance between two breakwaters. In the harbor, Yacht Club Kurland has a permanent berth, modern lighting, electricity and water connections, as well as a well-equipped service building with a wastewater pumping station.

Walks are possible along Mērsraga pludmale and through the pine forest. A wooden boardwalk built in 2018 leads from the parking area to Mērsraga pludmale, providing a clear landmark on the way to the coast. The birdwatching tower in Mērsrags offers expansive views of coastal meadows and grassland grazed by cattle.

Mērsrags is considered an excellent place for observing waterfowl. Migratory birds, songbirds and birds of prey gather in the area. Birdwatching therefore complements classic beach activities with a nature-focused aspect centered on the landscape and wildlife.

The tower of the Mērsrags Lighthouse is a nationally significant architectural monument. At Mērsraga Evanģēliski luteriskā baznīca, architectural history and preserved furnishings come together: the present wooden building was erected in 1809 and completely rebuilt in 1896. The church is considered one of the oldest wooden churches in Latvia.

Several furnishings in Mērsraga Evanģēliski luteriskā baznīca are state-protected cultural monuments. They include J. F. Sartoris’s altarpiece “Christ with the Child,” J. Pipars’s 1793 painting “Jesus Saves the Drowning Peter,” an organ from the second half of the 19th century and a chandelier from the end of the 19th century.

The Muzejs “Saieta nams” devotes part of its exhibition to old Latvian writing, ownership and magical symbols. An extensive collection of such symbols can be seen on work tools and household objects. The museum is housed in a building erected in 1811, described as the oldest residential building in Mērsrags and preserved to this day.
