Vaiņode – Cultural History, Airfield and Nature

The former railway station building is an important reference point in Vaiņode’s history. Nearby, on the square beside the station building, stands the Vaiņode Hymn Stone. It bears an engraving of the Latvian national anthem and is the only known object of its kind in Latvia to date. This gives the square beside the station particular cultural significance.

The bell of the former Bāte–Vaiņode Church can also be seen in the churchyard.

Vaiņode Airfield was formerly a Soviet military airfield and was one of the largest military airfields in the Baltics. Sixteen hangars and 1,800 metres of the former 2,500-metre runway have been preserved.

This information is essential for planning: the site should not be regarded as a destination that can be visited spontaneously. Volzbahs Hill is 2 kilometres from the centre and complements the historical themes with time spent outdoors. In winter, it has a slope more than 100 metres long for skiing, snowboarding or sledging. During the rest of the year, equipped areas are available for picnics, walks and photo shoots.

The possible focus therefore changes depending on the time of year: in winter, the slope is the main attraction, while other uses of the site are described outside the winter season.
