Sokolku Parish – Culture, Churches and Landscape

Sokolku Parish is characterised by its culture, religious sites and landscape. Its individual facets range from preserved cultural heritage and religious traditions to natural sites and dated events.

Culture

The library of Sokolku Parish preserves books, periodicals, manuscripts and other documents as cultural heritage. It makes the collected information accessible to everyone interested. It is located in the centre of the parish, in the same building as the cultural centre. The library regularly organises literary exhibitions, quarterly new book days, as well as literary and thematic events, library tours, handicraft activities and master classes. In addition, the amateur theatre group ANALIZ is dedicated to maintaining and preserving amateur theatre traditions.

Church

The Ostrones Svētā Aloīza Parish is listed at Ustroņi, Sokolku Parish, LV-4640. Services in the parish are scheduled for the fourth Sunday of each month at 14:00. The Ostrones (Ustroņu) Svētā Aloīza Roman Catholic Church was built in 1935 and has three altars with sculptures of saints.

Nature

The hills of Tončuka Kolns, Augstais Kalns and Kudļu Kalns are located in the vicinity of Sokolku Parish. Pūdnīka Sola island lies in the wider regional surroundings of Sokolku Parish. The bathing site on the Malta River in Podļizovka, Sokolku Parish, is listed in the official bathing water report for 2024. Swimming at this bathing site was permitted on 4 June and 2 July 2024.

Events

The event “Raibas Lieldienas” took place on 21 April 2025 at 11:00 on the sports field of Sokolku Parish, with free admission. The programme included egg rolling, egg fights, swinging and a quiz on Easter traditions.

Location

Sokolki is approximately 7 km from Viļāni. The church of Viļāni and its surroundings are an important pilgrimage site.

Transport

From 1 June 2026, two evening services on bus route 5135 “Rēzekne–Viļāni–Strupļi”, at 18:20 and 19:12, were extended to the “Strupļu ciems” stop. Also from 1 June 2026, the “Strupļu ciems” stop was added to the services of bus route 5136 “Rēzekne–Viļāni–Ružina–Malta” at 8:30, 11:20 and 13:05.
