Preila: Dune, Lagoon and Village History

From the 53-metre-high Preilos kopa, you can see the Baltic Sea and the shore of the Curonian Lagoon, as well as Preilos ragas and the bay. Across the lagoon, the Horn of Ventė may be visible; the Great Curonian Dune Ridge can also be seen from the dune. Far to the south, Grobšto ragas, which belongs to Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast, may also come into view.

The ridge around Preila is almost entirely covered with pine forest. Mountain pines grow on the crests, while the slopes are mostly planted with Baltic pines. The landscape around Preilos kopa thus combines wide views with a ridge defined by pine trees. During the Soviet era, several artists painted on the dune. This is why the name Menininkų kopa, “Artists’ Dune,” also became established among local residents.

At the southern edge of the settlement, you can climb Preilos kopa. A footpath along the lagoon towards Nida starts there. The Curonian Loop long-distance cycling route also passes through Preila. Preila’s origins are linked to the history of Nagliai: in 1843, residents moved here via Purvynė from Nagliai, which had been buried by sand, and founded the settlement. The school’s history also dates back to the 19th century. In 1849, a school was moved from Naujieji Nagliai to Preila; children from Pervalka also attended it.

After the former school building was destroyed by fire, a new brick school building was erected in 1907. It is still standing today. Another local landmark is the old ethnographic cemetery: it lies on the other side of the village’s only street and is surrounded by forest. The school’s history and the cemetery offer different ways to explore the village’s past—one through the development of the school, the other through a cemetery in its described setting.

Preila is known for its smoked fish. You can buy smoked bream seasoned with smoke and herbs from a fisherman. It is recommended that you eat the fish straight away in a shelter set up by the lagoon. If you plan to buy some, confirm that it is currently available first.
