The municipality extends across the Žemaičių Upland, the edge of the West Žemaičiai Plateau, and the Karšuva Lowland. Its lowest point is at an elevation of 43 metres near the Jūra River.

The Jūra and its tributaries Akmena, Vėžus, and Lokysta flow through the municipality. The state-significant lakes Paršežeris and Paežeriai are also located there.
Nature
Forests cover 28.4 percent of the municipality’s area, including spruce, pine, and birch forests. The larger forests include Pagramantis, Barsukinė, Didkiemis, Teneniai, Šventi, and Radvietis.
Elevations
At 234 metres, Medvėgalis is the highest point both in the municipality and in the Žemaitija region. The hill lies 10 kilometres east of Laukuva.
The protected landscapes in the municipality include the Pagramantis and Varnių Regional Parks, the Stemplių Landscape, the Upyna Geomorphological Reserve, the Jūra Botanical Reserve, and the Aitra Hydrographical Reserve.
The city of Šilalė is crossed by the Lokysta River; there is a pond in the city centre.
