What can you discover about history and culture?

At the archaeological site of Crkvishte in the village of Koreshnica, the complex includes a church with early Byzantine and medieval building phases, as well as a necropolis. In Demir Kapija, Markov Grad has an inner fortress, or acropolis. The Kale–Strezov grad site includes the medieval fortress of Prosek, the remains of an early Byzantine church and medieval graves. These sites offer different points of interest if you are interested in early and medieval history.

Later architectural and religious history is also represented: the Church of St. Athanasius in the village of Chiflik was built in 1857 and painted with frescoes in 1879. The mosque in Koreshnica was renovated in 2005 and built on the foundations of a mosque dating from 1663. The Church of St. Nicholas in the village of Klisura is considered the oldest in the region; the feast of St. Nicholas of Summer is celebrated there on May 22.

The Wine Museum explores the town’s history, the art of winemaking, archaeology and archaeological sites, ethnology, and the flora and fauna of Demir Kapija. It brings together several themes that you can also consider individually when deciding what interests you on your trip.

Birds found in the municipality include Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures, golden eagles and peregrine falcons. What defines the region’s wine and local products?

The Popova Kula winery and its vineyards are on the southern slope of Veliko Brdo, west of Demir Kapija and near the E-75. The winery produces wines from international, local and regional grape varieties, including Stanushina. It also produces brandy and organic lavender oil from its own fields.
