Resen brings together a distinctive neoclassical building and art and museum collections. The landscape of the Prespa Basin is also part of the destination’s character. This lets you consider culture and nature side by side when planning your trip.

Resen at a glance

Saraj is among the most representative neoclassical buildings in Macedonia and is considered the most representative building in Resen. Saraj houses an archaeological museum of Macedonia and the House of Culture Dragi Tozija. A permanent exhibition features works by Macedonian painter Keraca Visulcheva. Works from the Resen Ceramics Colony are also on display; the Gallery of Contemporary Ceramics permanently exhibits 300 selected works.

Another cultural destination is the Tatarchev Memorial House in the centre of Resen. It is dedicated to the life of the family of national hero Hristo Tatarchev. The exhibition covers 280 square metres and features eight wax figures, original objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, and paintings depicting scenes from the family’s life.

What makes Saraj interesting?

Different forms of cultural heritage come together at Saraj: neoclassical architecture, archaeological collections, painting and ceramics. The permanent exhibition of works by Keraca Visulcheva provides a personal artistic focus. The ceramics collection complements it with a different form of artistic expression. The building also houses the House of Culture Dragi Tozija.

Two points of reference help put the building in context: Saraj is described as the most representative building in Resen and is also counted among the most representative neoclassical buildings in Macedonia. This conveys its significance both in the cityscape and in the country’s architectural context.

What other cultural sites are there in Resen Municipality?

Churches and collections add to the cultural offerings in Resen Municipality. The Church of St. George in Kurbinovo was built in 1191. Its frescoes depict, among others, the Archangel Gabriel, Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary, and Saints Cyril and Methodius. The church is one kilometre above the village of Kurbinovo and 15 kilometres from the centre of Resen.

In Brajčino, the Church of St. Petka contains frescoes created in two phases, in the 16th and 18th centuries. The small church has a single nave and a three-sided apse. The Ethnological Museum in Podmočani offers a different kind of collection: a private collection in the home of Jone Eftimovski, with more than 2,000 works of art and over 160 Macedonian national costumes from all the ethnological regions of Macedonia.

How does the landscape shape the destination of Resen?

Resen Municipality lies in the Prespa Basin. It is located between Pelister and Galičica National Parks and contains the Small and Big Prespa Lakes. The Baba Mountains, with 2,600-metre-high Pelister, border the basin to the east; to the west are the Galičica Mountains, reaching 2,235 metres. This geographical setting places the lakes and mountains within a shared regional context.
