Tetovo at a glance

The central section of the Šar Mountains covers most of the municipality of Tetovo. At 2,747 meters, Titov Vrv is both the highest peak in the municipality and the highest peak in the Šar Mountains. The region therefore brings together two clearly distinct interests: urban history and mountain landscapes.
Which historic sites can you discover in Tetovo?
Tetovo’s old public hammam was built near the Shkumbin River by Mehmet bej Çelebiu toward the end of the 15th century. For centuries, it served aristocratic merchants traveling along the Via Egnatia. It was first restored in 1968 and converted into an art gallery. A further restoration took place in 2006 as a joint project of the Ministry of Culture, the National Conservation Center and the US Embassy in Skopje.
The Šarena Džamija, also called Xhamia e Pashës or Alaca Cami, is located near the Pena River. The Ottoman sisters Hyrshide and Mensure Hatun originally had it built in 1495. In 1833, Abdurrahman Pasha renovated and redesigned the mosque; the sisters’ tomb is next to the building. The Arabati-Baba Tekḱe, also known as Arabati Baba Teqe or Harabati Baba Tekkesi, also tells part of the city’s history: it was established in 1538 around the türbe of the Albanian Bektashi dervish Sersem Ali Baba. A waqf endowed by Recep Paşa established the present-day grounds in 1799.
Other cultural and archaeological sites include the ruined Tetovo Fortress and the archaeological site of Jelençe in Bozovce. Jelençe is a medieval necropolis with stone-slab graves. The fortress complex includes a guesthouse, a dungeon, a kitchen, a dining hall and a well. The Church of Sv. Kiril i Metodij houses an icon gallery, one of the earliest icon exhibitions in a church gallery space in North Macedonia. If you are interested in different kinds of historic sites, you can include these examples in your trip planning.
What nature and outdoor activities does the region offer?
The Popova Šapka ski center has been operating since 1934 and is one of the oldest ski centers in the Balkans. During the other months, it serves as a starting point for hiking and cycling routes. Depending on your travel interests, a visit can therefore be combined with winter activities or tours in other seasons, without implying anything about specific conditions or services.
The Fortress Trail, starting from the plateau of Tetovo Fortress, offers another panorama. The view stretches west toward Kobilica and along the entire ridge of the Šar Mountains, from the peak of Karanikola to the peak of Crn Vrv. Banjiche is marked on the trail as a source of mineral-rich water. The archaeological site of Kisha, a necropolis discovered in 1982, is located in Veshala. The area is also known for its proximity to the Great and Small Karanikola glacial lakes.
Brodec is in the northern part of the municipality, on the slopes of the Šar Mountains. The village is characterized by old traditional houses with roofs covered in stone slabs. Hikers and cyclists often use Brodec as a starting point for tours to the peak of Vrtop. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first consider whether Tetovo’s architectural history, the mountain landscape or outdoor activities will be the main focus of your trip.
