The city’s architectural history dates back to the Middle Ages: Duke Siemowit IV had a stone castle built around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. It replaced Siemowit III’s earlier wooden defensive tower. The year 1611 marks a later, turbulent chapter, when Tsar Vasili IV Shuisky and his family were held captive in the castle. They died there the following year.
The town hall brings together architectural history and distinctive details. The Neoclassical building was constructed between 1821 and 1824 to a design by Hilary Szpilowski, replacing the wooden town hall that burned down in 1809. Its ground floor has recessed arcades, above which rises a four-sided clock tower with an openwork roof lantern. The former inn at Rynek 16 tells a different architectural story: built in the 1820s, it was the city’s second brick building. The Neoclassical structure stands on Baroque foundations and cellars dating from the 18th century.

Two Tuscan columns and small pediments above the windows define its façade. The present-day Chapel of St. James, meanwhile, is a Neo-Gothic church built between 1883 and 1886. Every year, on the last Sunday in July, a traditional solemn indulgence celebration in honor of the Apostle James is held there.
