Bielsk Podlaski developed into an economic and trading center on the route from the Crown to Lithuania and from Brest to the west. The town was also a royal station on the Kraków–Vilnius route.

History and Culture

Bielsk Podlaski has a documented medieval and early modern history: the town appears in Rus' chronicles from the mid-13th century, was first mentioned in a political document in 1366, and was granted Magdeburg rights in 1495.

Also documented is a multiconfessional heritage with Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches, as well as a historic Jewish presence, including a synagogue recorded in 1542.
