Mragowo at a glance

The Town Hall on the market square was built in 1825; it houses a branch of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. The historic centre is characterised by listed 19th-century townhouses and cobbled streets. Lake Czos has a waterfront promenade and quiet beaches in the city centre. The lakeside amphitheatre hosts festivals and music events.

Other distinctive visitor attractions include a museum with exhibitions on the city’s and region’s history, Mrągowo Tower, with 100 steps and a viewing point, as well as several routes and leisure activities. The following sections show what kind of visit each place and activity offers.

What do the Old Town, Town Hall and museums tell us?

The Town Hall is both a central feature of the market square and a building dating from 1825. It houses a branch of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. Those interested in the city’s history can visit the museum in Mragowo, where a permanent exhibition spans from the Stone Age, through the period of Roman influence, to modern and contemporary times. Temporary exhibitions cover a range of topics, including the history of tourism in Masuria, art, and local events.

The character of the Old Town is reflected in its listed 19th-century townhouses and cobbled streets. They evoke the character of an earlier small Masurian town. Mrągowo Tower, formerly known as Wieża Bismarcka, adds another historical landmark: it was officially opened on 18 August 1906. It is considered the first Bismarck tower in Masuria and remains the best-preserved structure of its kind in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

What experiences can you choose in Mragowo?

A visit to the tower combines themed exhibitions with a climb up 100 steps. At the top, you can enjoy views over Mragowo, the surrounding lakes, and the Masurian forests. The quests “Mrągowscy Kowboje” and “Poznaj Mrągowo” offer another way to get to know the city: “Poznaj Mrągowo” introduces the city’s history and sights. The “Mrągowscy Kowboje” quest follows a 6-kilometre route around the grounds and takes about two hours to complete.

This puzzle trail starts at the Mrągowskie Centrum Kultury, ul. Warszawska 26. To take part, all you need is a puzzle leaflet with rhyming clues that lead you around the grounds and ultimately to a “treasure.” Those who would rather tackle a variety of obstacles and courses will find dozens of obstacles and courses hundreds of metres long at Lemur Park rope park, with different levels of difficulty. At the Museum of Military Technology, visitors can touch the exhibits and enter many of them.

How do the activities at Lake Czos differ from those on the water?

The waterfront promenade and quiet beaches on Lake Czos are in the city centre. The lakeside amphitheatre offers a different kind of experience: it hosts festivals and music events, including the International Country Picnic, the Culture of the Eastern Borderlands Festival, and the Belcanto Opera Festival. The events range from country music and Eastern Borderlands culture to opera.

For a longer excursion through the lake district, the 36-kilometre kayaking route on the Dajna is another option. It connects Piecki, Mragowo, and Święta Lipka, passing through the picturesque lakes of the Mragowo Lake District. The route is quite different from the 6-kilometre puzzle trail around the grounds in Mragowo: one is a kayaking route between three places, while the other is a quest with a puzzle leaflet.
