Beclean: Salt, History and Local Traditions

History

The archaeological site of Băile Figa lies approximately halfway between the town of Beclean and the village of Figa, about 300 metres west of the road connecting them. On its surface are saline muds, springs, ponds, saltwater streams and halophilic vegetation. In 2020, longitudinal and circular salt-aerosol structures were built at Băile Figa. These salt structures are considered the first of their kind in Romania. The archaeological site currently appears to be the most important site in Transylvania and one of the most important in all of Romania for the study of prehistoric salt extraction.

Beclean therefore brings together very different historical and local themes. Alongside salt archaeology are the architectural history of the Reformed church and the castles, the hunting museum, the markets held on Wednesdays, and the tradition maintained annually in the Figa district. These focal points can be considered separately without mixing up their respective periods and forms.

The Reformed church in Beclean is a 15th-century building that was extended and renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries. It preserves Late Gothic details, including the west portal, niches in the chancel wall and the window surrounds. Andras Bethlen Castle was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style and stood amid a park laid out as an English landscape garden in the 19th century. Count Pál Bethlen's castle was built in the 17th century near the former fortress of Beclean and features medieval architectural elements.

The Muzeul Casa de Vânătoare opened in 2009 as the first public museum in the history of the town of Beclean. It displays hunting trophies, animal hides, stuffed birds and firearms.

Local Life

In the Figa district of Beclean, Înstruțatul boului is observed as an annually maintained local tradition on Whit Sunday. During the tradition, the decorated ox is led to the hill behind the church and then released downhill towards the village. At the Wednesday markets in Beclean, producers from the surrounding area sell agricultural products, livestock products and handicrafts. In addition, fairs are held in Beclean two or three times a year.

Leisure

Herghelia Beclean breeds Lipizzaner horses, including the black and bay colour varieties, as well as Semigreul Românesc horses. It offers riding opportunities and carriage rides.
