Homorod between the fortified church and mud volcanoes

Homorod stands out for the Vulcanii Noroioși de la Băile Homorod, a geological reserve of national importance. Six mud volcanoes have been observed in the protected area; in view of the region’s geological makeup, they are considered an extremely rare geological phenomenon.

Culture

By the end of the 15th century at the latest, the Romanesque church of Homorod had been fortified with a tower above the old altar and two surrounding walls. The tower reaches a height of 27.70 metres across seven levels. The eighth level forms a defensive walkway with a wooden balustrade, to which three church bells are attached today.

Another historical facet is associated with the Biserica-cetate din Homorod. After its extensive fortification with two defensive structures after 1500, it was never conquered. The church complex’s architectural form, height and defensive walkway provide different starting points for exploring the history of the village.

Nature

The mud volcano reserve lies east of Homorod; access is via the exit from the village towards the former Băile Homorod. The themed trail at the mud volcanoes uses information panels and 3D elements to explain the area’s geology, the formation of the mud volcanoes, and the biodiversity of the surrounding area, including its flora and birdlife.

The confluence of the Homorodul Mic and Homorodul Mare, where the Homorod River is formed, is also part of the themed trail. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between an explanatory nature theme and the village’s architectural heritage.

Spa history

The Băile Homorod health and climatic spa, which was of local importance, operated until 1975 and is now in an advanced state of disrepair requiring extensive investment. The mineral waters of Băile Homorod have been used therapeutically since the beginning of the 20th century; during the interwar period, six springs were enclosed in two pools.
