Lisa in Romania: Crafts, Trails and the Făgăraș Mountains

La Vâltori is considered the only center for wool processing and the production of wool products in the area. There, wool can be processed from its raw state into clothing, hats and carpets. Facilities for traditional wool processing, passed down through generations, are preserved there.

Culture and Crafts

In Lisa, traditional costumes and dances such as Horiţa, Hodoroaga, Ca la Breaza and Datul în strai, as well as the carols of the cetei de feciori, are passed down from generation to generation. The local custom of “datul în strai” is associated with New Year’s Day, January 1. In the municipality of Lisa, the cetele de feciori are associated with the winter holidays. The Breaza Ethnographic Museum, considered a tourist attraction, is located within the municipality of Lisa.

Trails and Geographic Location

The Plaiul Lisei holiday area lies approximately 2.3–4 km south of Lisa in the valley of the Apa Râului River. The DC 75A road connects Lisa with the Plaiul Lisei holiday area. The DJ 104A road runs through Lisa and continues toward Sâmbăta de Sus, Drăguș, Viștea de Sus and Victoria. The DC 75 road connects Ludişor, Pojorta and Lisa.

The nearest specified rail access point is the Voila stop, approximately 14 km away; Făgăraș railway station is about 25 km away. For geographic orientation, connections to localities and rail access points complement marked routes and elevation information.

Nature and Trails

A marked trail with a blue triangle sign leads from Voila railway station via Pojorta, Breaza and Coltii Brezei to Cabana Urlea. On Colții Brezei, a wooded hill approximately 3 km south of Breaza, lie the ruins of the fortress of Negru Vodă. Cabana Urlea is located at an elevation of 1,533 m in the southern part of the area, near the Pârâul Curmăturii, on the Pojorta–Cabana Urlea–Plaiul Foii (Zărnești) tourist route.

Nearby Lacul Urlea is a glacial lake at an elevation of 2,170 m on the northern slope of the Făgăraș Mountains. The Portița Iezerului–Lacul Urlea–Șaua Moșului route is considered an access route to nearby Lacul Urlea. History and Remembrance

Historically, facilities and mills were built and operated on the Pârâul Lisa for producing flour, bran and oil, cutting logs, and processing wool textiles. The village of Lisa is first mentioned in a document dated July 9, 1527, which names the boyar Radu de Lisza. Lisa has a bust of the writer Octavian Paler, unveiled on the occasion of the centenary of the Great Union. The Lisa primary school has plaques about Octavian Paler and the anti-communist resistance in the Făgăraș Mountains.
