Ciumani: Culture, Views and Nature Experiences

Ciumani combines art, religious sites and regional landscapes.

Key facts about Ciumani

Ciumani combines a cultural site, religious sites, artworks in the village landscape and scenic viewpoints on Amza. The church was consecrated in 1878, several artworks date from 1995 to 2001, and the hiking route leads from Veresvirag to Amza.

Art and History

The Casa Memorială Borsos Miklós is a cultural site in Ciumani.

Five exhibition rooms are dedicated to the artist’s life and work.

The statues and the monument, however, are located in the village landscape of Ciumani, not inside the cultural site.

The Roman Catholic Church “Biserica Romano-Catolică Sfinții Petru și Pavel” in Ciumani was consecrated in 1878 by the Transylvanian Bishop Fogarassy Mihály.

Public art includes several dated works. The statue of Kossuth Lajos in Ciumani, created by Kollo Miklós, was unveiled in October 2001. The monument “Sabia lui Sf. Ștefan” in Ciumani, created by the sculptor Santa Csaba, was inaugurated in 2000 as part of the celebrations for the new millennium. The statue “Primavera” (Flora), created by Borsos Miklós, was the first statue erected in Ciumani and was installed in 1995.

The Casa Tradițiilor in Ciumani was restored by local residents. As a separate place in Ciumani, it should be distinguished from the Casa Memorială Borsos Miklós.

Carved Szekler gates are gate structures. In Ciumani, they are regarded as a material expression of the belief that the Szekler community should preserve valuable centuries-old traditions. In this way, the gates combine an architectural form with a communal understanding of tradition.

Religious Sites and Traditions

Below the summit of Amza, in the Ciumani area, there is an unusual rock formation. Popular belief gives this natural site religious significance.

A patronal feast is the celebration associated with a church or chapel. The patronal feast of the chapel in Săsești is celebrated on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord, 25 March. The chapel’s consecration date is a separate time reference and should be distinguished from it.

The Landscape Around Ciumani

From the Veresvirag ski slope, an uphill hiking route leads to Vârful Amza and the Belvedere Veresvirag viewpoint. The route and the viewpoint have different functions: the route leads uphill, while the belvedere offers sweeping views over the mountains and valley.

The Belvedere Veresvirag viewpoint on Mount Amza offers views of the surrounding mountains and across the Giurgeu Depression.

Hiking Route and Equestrian Center

At the “Domokos Árpád” equestrian center, the offerings include riding lessons for beginners and horseback rides in nature.
