Sebeșu de Sus between the Moașa Valley and the Făgăraș Mountains
Nature
Sebeșu de Sus lies in the Valea Moașei valley. The Moașa River, also called Moașa Sebeșului, is 13 km long and a tributary of the Sebeș. The entire built-up area of Sebeșu de Sus is included in the SPA Piemontul Făgăraș. The valley area, river course, and boundaries of the protected area thus represent different geographical references for the locality.
The impression of the landscape also changes significantly along the mountain route. The section over Muchia Moașei passes through birch and alder thickets, old beech forest, and meadows with views of the Lotru Mountains and the Sibiu Basin. For planning purposes, these landscape areas can be considered together with the route length and the stated duration, without conflating the individual details.
History
In Sebeșu de Sus, the Biserica Sfinții Apostoli Petru și Pavel is registered as a historic monument under code SB-II-m-B-12544. The first written mention of the locality dates from 1383; at that time, Sebeșu de Sus was named as part of the Tălmaciului domain. The monument and the year indicate two distinct historical facts: the church is registered as a monument, while the year refers to the earliest cited written evidence of the locality.
Traditional sources of livelihood in Sebeșu de Sus include livestock farming, agriculture, fruit growing, and beekeeping. These activities form part of the locality’s inherited economic and cultural history. Sebeșu de Sus was also selected as the permanent annual venue for the Făgăraș Fest on the Valea Moașei. Cabana Suru was built in 1940 by the Turing Clubul României.
