Discover Șandra: History, Culture and Regional Cuisine
Șandra combines a clearly recognizable settlement history with protected buildings and regional cultural themes.
The protected rural ensemble “Zona Pieței” dates from the beginning of the 20th century. In the center of Șandra, it is registered under heritage protection code TM-ÎI-a-B. The ensemble provides the locality with a specific historical point of reference.
There are underground thermal water springs in the area around Șandra. The term describes a possibility for tourism development; it does not imply the existence of a current spa, an accessible thermal facility or a specific use of the springs.
A cultural tourism offering by Turism Timiș uses the local transport infrastructure to follow the traces of the Banat Swabians in Șandra.
How did the history of Șandra develop?
Șandra was founded in 1833 under the names Alexandria or Sàndorhàsza. The year of foundation marks a clear starting point for the locality’s history and makes it clear that the present-day name was not the only historical name of the place. Place names and settlement development are therefore closely connected.
The settlement was founded by 140 German colonist families. This number describes the organized scale of the early settlement and forms an important part of Șandra’s historical background.
In 1839, Germans, Hungarians and Slovaks, all of them Catholic, were brought to Șandra. Several population groups and the Catholic character thus emerge together in the locality’s early history. The development from 1833 to 1839 therefore provides a comprehensible historical framework: the foundation was followed by further settlement, connecting the locality with different cultural backgrounds.
What makes the townscape worth seeing?
The rural ensemble “Zona Pieței” is one of the existing sights in Șandra. It is located in the center and is registered under heritage protection code TM-ÎI-a-B.
The ensemble dates from the beginning of the 20th century and therefore from a later period than the founding of Șandra in 1833. Different historical layers thus stand side by side in the same locality: the establishment of the settlement and a protected rural ensemble from a later period.
