The Otetelișanu Manor House was built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries and combines architectural elements of cula buildings and the Brâncoveanu style. Petrache Poenaru was born in 1799 on the Otetelișanu estate in Benești. He was a Romanian educator, teacher, engineer and mathematician, a member of the Romanian Academy and the inventor of the reservoir pen, the later fountain pen.
Culture and History
Near the Otetelișanu Manor House, the “Sfinții Voievozi” Church is located in Benești. It is a historic monument and was designed as a court church and chapel of the boyar’s estate.
In the Irimești district, which belongs to the town of Bălcești, stands the “Sfântul Nicolae” Church, founded in 1884 by Badea Albulescu and Radu Nicolaescu. In the village of Otetelișu, which belongs to the town of Bălcești, the “Sfinții Voievozi” Church was founded in 1774 by the Clucer Șerban Otetelișanu.
The church of Gorunești is a Category B historic monument. Its dedications, “Intrarea în Biserică a Maicii Domnului” and “Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul”, are dated to 1798–1799.
When visiting religious buildings, it is worth reading each designation carefully: the year of foundation, founder, dedication, monument status and original function are not interchangeable. This distinction keeps the individual local references clear and prevents different buildings from being turned into a collective category. The dates can also be arranged chronologically if you are interested in the development of architectural culture.
For your personal preparation, you can pursue a bibliographic focus alongside visits to the specific locations. Bălcești City Library lists a total of 20,622 documents in its holdings.
Events
The “Bâlci de Sfântul Ilie” fair takes place in Bălcești on 20 July. A celebration of the city’s day was announced in Bălcești for 31 August 2025, in the park in front of the cultural center.
The fair on 20 July and the celebration announced for 31 August 2025 differ in their temporal status. For your own calendar overview, you can note both details separately; historic buildings remain an independent subject area and are not mixed with event dates.
Landscape and Orientation
The Olteț River crosses Bălcești from north to south over a distance of 21.5 km. National Road DN 65C crosses Bălcești over a distance of 7 km.
The two distance figures describe different spatial scales. For personal route planning, you should therefore read them separately instead of deriving a combined distance from them. You can keep the river course and the road section as two separate orientation layers in your notes.
When choosing a hotel in Bălcești, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer pages can provide a practical basis for comparison. This information is separate from the location details: the manor house, churches, events, Olteț and DN 65C describe different subjects, while the choice of accommodation reflects your personal travel conditions.
