What natural attractions does Kaliningrad Oblast offer?

In the wider destination of Kaliningrad Oblast, the Curonian Spit is a distinctive natural landscape. The sandy peninsula is 98 kilometers long and between 350 meters and 3.8 kilometers wide. As a natural barrier, it separates the salt water of the Baltic Sea from the fresh water of the Curonian Lagoon. This transboundary Russian-Lithuanian World Heritage site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 in the “Cultural Landscape” category.

On the Russian part of the spit, the national park has seven ecological educational trails and three tourist routes. Twelve stairways provide access to the Baltic Sea beach; there is a parking lot at each access point.

What conditions apply to the trails?

Six named ecological trails are located at kilometers 6, 32, 33, 37, 42, and 45 of the spit: “Korolevskiy bor,” “Vysota Myullera,” “Rossittenskiy les,” “Tantsuyushchiy les,” “Vysota Efa,” and “Ozero Lebed.” They are accessible year-round, around the clock, but may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work. Be sure to check the latest notices before visiting.

A different rule applies to the “Fringilla” ecological trail: from April to October, visits are possible only as part of a guided tour with at least ten people. The national park’s visitor center also has seasonal opening hours: from May to September, it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. From October to April, it is open five days a week, except Mondays and Tuesdays. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to confirm them before your trip.

What other landscapes are there in the oblast?

The Curonian Spit is not the region’s only natural setting. Vishtynetskiy National Park in the southeast of Kaliningrad Oblast covers more than 27,600 hectares. It was established on April 1, 2024, by Government Resolution No. 412, on the basis of the nature park of the same name. The extensive forests in this landscape were formerly called the Rominten Forest and also the Red Forest.

The “Tantsuyushchiy les” coniferous forest on the Curonian Spit has a different character: it is known for its bizarre, zigzag-shaped twisted tree trunks. The ecological trail of the same name is at kilometer 37 of the spit, four kilometers north of the settlement of Rybachiy. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the forest landscape in the southeast of the oblast and a distinctive coniferous forest on the spit, without equating either with the area near Chernyakhovskiy District.

How should you plan your accommodation search?
