Dobrino can be understood through a church, a preserved old railway station building and local history. The natural attractions of the wider Kaliningrad Oblast provide a separate regional context; this distinction helps you consider your accommodation location and travel interests separately.

Dobrino at a glance

  • Dobrino is home to the Church of the Seraphim-Diveyevo Icon of the Mother of God “Umilenije”.
  • An old railway station building on a railway line has been preserved; Dobrino was formerly called Nautzken.
  • The town has a mass grave of Soviet soldiers who fell in January 1945.

What traces tell the story of Dobrino?

The Church of the Seraphim-Diveyevo Icon of the Mother of God “Umilenije” is a specific cultural landmark in Dobrino. A pilgrimage group visited the church in 2023; a pilgrimage account records that it was the first group in the newly built church at the time. An old, restored icon of the Mother of God “Miroprositel'nitsa” was described as a discovery during a visit to the church. You can therefore encounter different cultural details: the church’s dedication, the reported pilgrimage and the icon.

The former name Nautzken is also part of Dobrino’s history. The preserved old railway station building on a railway line provides a tangible landmark connected to the town’s past. Dobrino is also home to a mass grave of Soviet soldiers who fell in January 1945. The town’s history thus stretches from its former name and railway station to the events of January 1945.

What natural attractions are there in Kaliningrad Oblast?

Kaliningrad Oblast broadens the view beyond Dobrino. The Curonian Spit is a 98-kilometre-long sandy peninsula, between 350 metres and 3.8 kilometres wide. It forms a natural barrier between the salty Baltic Sea and the freshwater Curonian Lagoon. The cross-border Russian-Lithuanian World Heritage site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 in the “Cultural Landscape” category.

On the Russian part of the spit, the national park has seven ecological trails and three tourist excursion routes. The named trails include “Korolevskiy bor” at kilometre 6, “Vysota Myullera” at kilometre 32, “Rossittenskiy les” at kilometre 33, “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37, “Vysota Efa” at kilometre 42 and “Ozero Lebed'” at kilometre 45. The six trails listed are accessible around the clock and year-round; they may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work. Check the park’s latest notices before visiting. Twelve stairway crossings provide access to the Baltic Sea beach; there is a car park at each crossing.

The coniferous forest “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometre 37 of the Curonian Spit, four kilometres north of the settlement of Rybachiy, offers a distinctive landscape. It is known for its bizarre, zigzagging, twisted tree trunks. For a different landscape perspective, consider “Vishtynetskiy” National Park in the southeast of Kaliningrad Oblast: it was established on 1 April 2024, on the basis of the nature park of the same name, and covers more than 27,600 hectares. The extensive forests there are also associated with the names Rominten Forest and Red Forest.

Visiting the Curonian Spit also requires some planning. The national park’s visitor centre is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May to September. From October to April, it is open five days a week and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Opening hours may change, so check the times with the park before your trip.
