Ivangorod at a glance

  • The Ivangorod Fortress was built by Ivan III in 1492 and covers about 8 hectares.
  • The Small Powder Magazine houses a museum dedicated to the fortress’s history and an interactive exhibition.
  • You can find historic churches both inside the fortress and in the Parusinka district.

What does the fortress tell us about Ivangorod?

The Ivangorod Fortress is the central reference point for the area’s architectural and military history. Its authentic structures date from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The fortress is a monument of federal significance and an open-air museum. From its walls and towers, you can see the Estonian city of Narva and Narva Castle. Its area of about 8 hectares also gives you a sense of the scale of the complex.

The Church of the Dormition, with its Pokrovsky side chapel, is located inside the fortress. It was built in the early 16th century by order of Ivan III. This means that within the fortress grounds you can see both the fortified complex and a religious building from the same historical period.

What stories do the museums tell?

The second floor of the Small Powder Magazine houses an interactive exhibition on the fortress’s history, from its founding to the present day. A museum dedicated to the fortress is also located there. Exhibits include a model of a Hanseatic cog, archaeological finds and costumes from the Petrine era, including depictions of soldiers from the Preobrazhensky Regiment and the Great Northern War.

Documents, photographs, reconstructed uniforms of soldiers from the Great Northern War (1700–1721), and a working model of the fortress add to the collections. Archaeological material comes from excavations by expeditions of the Archaeological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. It illustrates life inside and near the fortifications, as well as the history of the region. The history of the complex is thus combined with insights into life in and around its walls.

What can you learn about Ivan Bilibin?

Since the 1980s, Ivangorod has preserved a collection from Ivan Bilibin’s family legacy comprising more than 400 objects. These include graphic works and paintings, finds from expeditions to the Russian North, Egyptian artifacts, theater designs, family photographs and personal documents. The permanent exhibition “Ivan Bilibin in Ivangorod” opened on August 15.

The exhibition presents key stages in Bilibin’s life: his expeditions to the Russian North, his emigration to Cairo and then to France, and his return to Leningrad. Alongside the history of the fortress, it focuses on an artist’s life and the different places where he traveled and worked.

What activities are available for children?

Interactive activities at the Small Powder Magazine include a shoemaker’s workshop and an archaeological sandbox. Both are intended for children and adults. They let visitors explore the exhibition content not only through documents and models, but also through hands-on activities.

Which churches shape the town?

The Church of the Holy Trinity is located in the Parusinka district. It was built in 1873–1875 at the expense of Baron A. L. Stieglitz and is a state-protected architectural monument. Together with the Church of the Dormition in the fortress, it illustrates two different histories of church construction in Ivangorod.
