Morkinskiy District: key facts
- Yoshkar Ser is in the northwestern part of the district, near the village of Nylkudo and about 23 kilometers from Morki.
- The Yoshkar Ser natural landmark covers approximately 60 hectares and is of regional importance.
- Shorunzha, also known as Uncho, is one of the old settlements in Morkinskiy District.
What natural landscapes can you discover?
The Mari name “Yoshkar Ser” can be translated as “Red Shore.” Trails and streams run along the wooded slope in the Yoshkar Ser area; small clearings offer views of fields, meadows, and surrounding villages. The ascent follows natural forest trails. The natural landmark was established to preserve its landscape, geological deposits, water network, and rare plants and animals. Forest, waterways, and open views of the surrounding area together define the character of the place.
Karman-Kuryk is near Abdaevo and 224.2 meters above sea level. This low-mountain feature of the Vyatka-Mari Wall has exposed layers of dolomite, limestone, marl, clay, and sandstone on its large northern and eastern slopes; karst features are also present. Caves existed there in the past. Karman-Kuryk was designated a state natural landmark in 1976. Unlike the forest trails and streams at Yoshkar Ser, here the focus is on rock formations and karst.
The Kamennaya Gora complex nature reserve extends across Morkinskiy and Kuschenerskiy districts. It therefore covers an area spanning two districts.
Where can you experience Mari culture?
A sacred memorial stone to Onar stands in Shorunzha. Founded there in 2015, the ethnocultural complex includes a creative workshop and the museum and ethnographic complex “Starinnaya mariyskaya usadba” (“Old Mari Homestead”). The manor house serves both as a museum and as a practical space. Ritual festivals and events held there include Shorykyol, Üarnya, Kugeche, Agavairem, Semyk, and Sÿrem. If you would like to include a celebration in your trip, check the current event date in advance.
Ethno-folklore tourist routes lead to places associated with traditional folk art, folklore, customs, oral traditions, and songs in Shorunzha, Kutyuk-Kiner, Chavainur, and Chodrayal. In Chavainur, the Sergey Grigoryevich Chavain Memorial House Museum offers another cultural highlight: its halls contain more than 1,000 exhibits, including collections about Chavain’s life, objects from the everyday life and culture of the Mari people, books, and paintings.
