Which museums showcase art and everyday history?
At the Ivan Shishkin House Museum, the art gallery displays the artist’s original paintings and graphic works in two halls. The House of Memory of M. I. Tsvetaeva offers a different perspective on life in Yelabuga in the past: its exhibition recreates the atmosphere of an apartment belonging to a Yelabuga family in the early 1940s. It features authentic household items from the Brodelshchikov family, including an old chest, a sewing machine, a wall mirror and dishes.
The Museum of Remembrance is dedicated to exhibits from the war years. These include documents, photographs, letters, awards, weapons and uniforms from the collections of the Yelabuga State Museum-Reserve and from residents’ private archives. Those interested in personal belongings and written records will find a different way to explore history here than in the art gallery.
The Nadezhda Durova Estate Museum features a preserved manor house dating from the first half of the 19th century. Durova spent the last years of her life there. The building thus connects the history of the place with the life of a specific historical figure.
How do the collections and buildings differ?
The Museum of Modern Ethnic Art is housed in the historic merchant’s home of Fyodor Girbasov and is dedicated to contemporary art with ethnic character. Its collection includes more than 1,200 works. Workshops and lectures are also offered; specific programs may change. This brings historic architecture and a collection focused on contemporary art together under one roof.
The “Portomoynya” Museum explores traditional 19th-century washhouses, where women washed clothes using the tools and methods of the time. An exhibition also traces the development of soap from the 19th century to the present and shows how its types and forms have changed. The V. M. Bekhterev Museum of Local and Medical History is located in a building of the zemstvo hospital, built by the merchant Alexander Baranov in 1881. It is considered the only museum of its kind in Russia. An interactive hall is housed in a former operating room; check whether this offering is available before your visit.
What experiences complement a museum visit?
At the “Traktir” Museum-Theater, visitors can explore the interiors of 19th-century inns and try Russian cuisine. This combines a look at historic interiors with a culinary experience. At the Spasskaya Fair, visitors can watch craftspeople at work in the “City of Masters” and make their own souvenirs. Check the event dates and program for your planned travel year.
During the fair, the All-Russian Bell-Ringing Festival takes place in front of Spasskaya Cathedral. The program includes performances by bell ringers and ensembles from Tatarstan, Russia and Europe; the program may vary between editions. For more individual exploration, the Yelabuga Tourist Information Center organizes excursions for groups and independent travelers and develops tours with interactive activities. This service offering may also change.
