Zelenodolsky District at a glance

  • At the beginning of 2020, the district’s natural and protected areas covered 14,686.13 hectares, or 10.5 percent of its area. They included the Raifa section of the Volga-Kama Reserve and the regional state nature reserve of the complex type “Sviyazhsky.”
  • Cultural destinations include the open-air museum “Tatar avyly,” the active Raifa-Bogoroditsky Monastery for Men and the Engelhardt Observatory.

What characterizes the nature of the Raifa section?

At the beginning of 2020, a section of the “Shorsky” zoological nature reserve was also part of the natural and protected areas. The Raifa section of the Volga-Kama Reserve and the “Sviyazhsky” nature reserve are cluster areas of the Great Volga-Kama Biosphere Reserve (“Raifa–forest”). It was established in 2005 by a decision of the Bureau of the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme.

The Raifa section covers 5,921 hectares and contains eight lakes. The largest, Lake Raifa, covers 30 hectares and is 20 meters deep. Another natural attraction there is the 3.5-hectare arboretum, with 500 plant species. These figures illustrate different aspects of the area: its extensive protected land, its lakes and its diverse plant collection.

What does the open-air museum tell you about Tatar village life?

In Isakovo, the Tatar open-air museum “Tatar avyly” recreates life and everyday routines in a medieval Tatar village. Visitors can see exhibition buildings designed as typical Tatar village houses, as well as farm buildings associated with a farmer, a craftsperson and a merchant. Tools, household items and furniture illustrate the period from the 15th to the 19th century.

This combination makes the museum a way to explore both a village’s architecture and the occupations and everyday objects on display. Its focus is on a reconstructed village world and material culture, while the Engelhardt Observatory explores the history of astronomy in the district.

What architecture can you see in Raifa?

The active Raifa-Bogoroditsky Monastery for Men is located on the shore of a lake within the Volga-Kama State Nature Reserve. The natural setting and the monastery are two distinct aspects of the same place. The Church of St. Sophia dates from the late 18th century; no more than seven people can be inside its church space at a time.

The dedications of the monastery’s cathedrals also tell their own stories: the Trinity Cathedral stands alongside a cathedral dedicated to the venerable fathers who were killed in Raifa and Sinai. The architecture, religious memory and lakeside setting give the monastery a cultural character distinct from that of the open-air museum, with its depictions of village life.

What can you learn at the Engelhardt Observatory?

The museum exhibition in the main building covers the history of the observatory, built in 1901 to designs by architects P. P. Malinovsky and K. L. Myufke. Another focus is the development of the Kazan school of astronomy from the early 19th century to the present. In this way, the exhibition connects architectural history with the development of a scientific discipline.

The Konstantin Vasilyev Memorial Museum is located in Vasilyevo. It adds another museum experience to the district’s diverse cultural offerings; a guided tour there is described in more detail in the FAQ.
