Uvinsky District at a glance

  • Erestem Cape lies 299 meters above sea level, is also known as the “Roof of Udmurtia,” and is the source of the Uva, Nylga, Chur, and Loza rivers.
  • The Vikurdan spring area lies in a wooded ravine; its springs mark the beginning of a right-bank tributary of the Uva.
  • Cultural attractions include the Artel center in Uzey-Tuklya, the Udmurt Cultural Center in Bulay, and the Sidorov family museum-estate.

Which landscape experiences stand out?

Erestem Cape brings together an elevation of 299 meters, the nickname “Roof of Udmurtia,” and the sources of four rivers. The Vikurdan spring area offers a different experience: numerous springs lie in a wooded ravine and mark the beginning of a right-bank tributary of the Uva. Here you can discover two distinct waterscapes in the district—river sources at the cape and a spring area in a ravine.

The Zateryannyy Klyuch eco-tour also takes you through a landscape connected to a designated protected area: one section of the tour runs within the Oblastnovskoye State Integrated Hunting Reserve. The tour is open to visitors with children. Check current route information before your visit.

In Chabishur stands a pine tree about 400 years old, added to the national register of ancient trees in 2015 and designated a “monument of living nature.” In Udmurt tradition, it is associated with rituals at the site and the worship of Inmar, the god; the pine was considered a place of power. The historical account of tree worship is part of cultural tradition.

Where can you discover Udmurt crafts and culture?

At the Artel tourism and craft center in Uzey-Tuklya, guests can learn the basics of traditional crafts through workshops and guided tours. Offerings include traditional and vertical weaving (tapestry weaving), artistic birch-bark work, carpentry and woodturning, painting, woodcarving, and patchwork. The different techniques offer insight into a range of materials and ways of working; contact the center to arrange dates and details.

The Udmurt Cultural Center in Bulay combines interactive tours and workshops for adults and children with a collection of household items, tools, clothing, and furniture. Visitors can learn to use a historic loom or weave bast shoes. The Tangyra performance features traditional signal instruments; visitors can take part in this ethnofuturist game. The hosts also serve guests national dishes. Contact the center in advance to arrange your visit.

At the Sidorov family museum-estate, hands-on activities sit alongside exhibits. Workshops cover gathering local herbs and grains, as well as color composition and plain weave. The wooden sculptures depict Udmurt creation myths and ancient beliefs, family and clan guardian spirits, a pantheon of gods, and totem animals. Hosts serve hot tabani pancakes and herbal tea to visitors by prior arrangement; check the program’s availability in advance as well.

What other local highlights are there?

In Mushkovay, the wooden Church of Dmitry of Thessaloniki, built in 2007, stands on the site of an earlier wooden church. It is dedicated to the memory of a warrior and martyr and is described as the only church in Udmurtia with this dedication. Together with the pine in Chabishur, it shows how natural sites and cultural traditions each carry their own stories in the district.

Two activities are specifically mentioned for trips with children: children are welcome on the Zateryannyy Klyuch eco-tour, and the interactive tours and workshops at the Bulay Cultural Center are for adults and children. Visits to the Sidorov family museum-estate, on the other hand, must be arranged in advance. It is also advisable to check dates and arrangements ahead of time with Artel and the cultural center.
