Pyatigorsk: Mineral Springs, Mount Mashuk and Lermontov
Accommodation in Pyatigorsk
Pyatigorsk brings together mineral-water traditions and Lermontov’s history, with views of the mountains. When planning your trip, it is worth getting to know the area’s different highlights, from Tsvetnik Park and Mount Mashuk to museums and historic sites.
Pyatigorsk at a glance
- Mount Mashuk is a 993-meter-high igneous mountain, but not a volcano. It is designated a natural monument and a protected historical and cultural area.
- Proval is an underground lake on the southeastern slope of Mount Mashuk. Its water appears turquoise because of its high sulfur content.
- Tsvetnik Park is Pyatigorsk’s oldest park; the Lermontov Gallery, one of the city’s symbols, is located there.
- A ten-kilometer ring road runs around the foot of Mount Mashuk and passes several well-known sites.
What shapes the landscape and the views?
Mount Mashuk provides a common point of reference for many of Pyatigorsk’s sights. In good weather, its summit offers views of the Caucasus Range and Elbrus, its highest peak. The Sun Gates, locally known as the Gates of Love, also frame a sweeping view: Pyatigorsk, Mount Beshtau, Yutsa and Dzhutsa are visible, and in clear conditions Elbrus can also be seen in the distance. The weather is a decisive factor.
Proval, an underground lake reached through a long tunnel, lies on Mashuk’s southeastern slope. Its high sulfur content gives the lake its turquoise color, and hydrogen sulfide can be smelled inside the cave. There is a paved area with benches in front of the tunnel entrance. An audio guide tells the story of the lake and reads excerpts from well-known novels. Check in advance whether the guide is available.
How do the walking routes and spa offerings differ?
The ring road around the foot of Mount Mashuk is ten kilometers long. Stops along the road include M. Yu. Lermontov’s dueling site, the Perkalsky Arboretum, Komsomolskaya Glade, Proval, Eolova Arfa and the Sun Gates. Check current route conditions before setting out.
Terrenkur offers a different kind of walk: Pyatigorsk has three main routes, which differ in how physical exertion is graded for people with illnesses. In the spa area, mineral water is served at two drinking galleries and eight springs, located close to the sanatoriums. As local arrangements may change, check the details before visiting. Tsvetnik Park offers another kind of stroll: it is a popular spot with residents and visitors alike, and the city’s oldest park.
Which places tell the story of Lermontov and the city’s history?
The Diana Grotto stands in the southern part of Tsvetnik Park and is one of Pyatigorsk’s best-known and oldest sights. Giuseppe Bernardazzi designed it in the spring of 1830; it was built in the summer of 1831 and completed the following autumn. One specific historical event associated with it is the “country ball” that Mikhail Lermontov held for ladies in front of the grotto on July 8, 1841. At the time, it was decorated with greenery, carpets and colorful lanterns.
The Lermontov House also offers insight into the poet’s history. Tours and lectures, as well as exhibitions and presentations about his life and work, are held there regularly; check the museum for current dates. In 1973, the house was converted into the M. Yu. Lermontov State Museum-Reserve. The museum is designated a historical monument of federal significance.
Poetry festivals are held every year at the foot of the Lermontov monument, which is described as the city’s most visited monument. The Lermontov Gallery is a defining feature of Tsvetnik Park and is also considered a symbol of Pyatigorsk. It hosts concerts, art exhibitions and themed events. The cool, shady Diana Grotto is in the same park. In this green urban space, architectural history, events and places to stroll come together.
What can you discover in the museums?
The Pyatigorsk Museum of Local History was founded in 1903 as the Museum of the Caucasian Mountain Society and is one of the oldest museums in the region. Its exhibition “Pages from the History of Pyatigorye” includes archaeological finds from different periods, edged weapons and firearms from the 18th to the early 20th century, materials on the city’s history, historical everyday objects and maps. Exhibitions may change, so check what is currently on display before your visit.
An insect museum in one of the Academic Gallery’s left wings features native and exotic butterflies, as well as live snakes, owls and chameleons. The Academic Gallery itself is known as Pyatigorsk’s “stone crown.” Check in advance whether the insect museum is currently open to visitors.
