Yasnogorsky District: Manor House, Hillfort and Baking Tradition
Accommodation in Yasnogorsky District
Yasnogorsky District is shaped by very different cultural themes: the former manor house in Fedorovka, the Early Iron Age hillfort of Strelitsa and the baking tradition at Fedyashevo Estate. Interactive tours, tastings and workshops are also offered at Fedyashevo Estate.
Yasnogorsky District at a glance
Fedorovka is home to the former manor house of Glikeria Nikolayevna Fedotova, an actress at the Imperial Moscow Theatre. The historic two-storey house with a mezzanine is surrounded by a park with avenues of linden and larch trees, a pond and a garden.
The Early Iron Age hillfort of Strelitsa stands on the high right bank of the Oka, between two ravines near the mouth of the Strelitsa River, on the grounds of a holiday camp. It is 0.5 km west of Makarovka and 1.5 km northwest of Fedorovka. At Fedyashevo Estate, the “Pekarnya Fedyashevo” bakery makes bread and baked goods using historical recipes.
How do the manor house and hillfort differ?
The former estate in Fedorovka brings together residential architecture and landscaped grounds: the two-storey house with a mezzanine is set among avenues of linden and larch trees, a reflective pond and a garden. The focus is therefore on the historic estate as a whole, not just the building.
The hillfort of Strelitsa, by contrast, is associated with the Early Iron Age and its location by the river. The high bank, ravines and proximity to the river mouth define its described setting. The distances to Makarovka and Fedorovka help locate the site geographically; they are not walking times or road distances. The district’s cultural and historical landscape thus encompasses both an estate and an archaeological site from another era.
What baking traditions and experiences are available at Fedyashevo Estate?
“Pekarnya Fedyashevo” began operating in May 2025. Its breads and baked goods are based on traditional recipes from Tula Governorate dating from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. These include recipes from the Filippov bakery dynasty and the M. A. Gartung family.
Fedyashevo Estate offers interactive tours of the estate and bakery with tastings. Workshops focus on making katelki, rye gingerbread and “Filippovskiye bulochki”. If you plan to visit the bakery or take part in one of these activities, check current availability and dates with the operator before your trip.
What cultural attractions does Tula Oblast offer?
In the wider travel destination of Tula Oblast, the exhibition “Skazanie o Mamayevom poboishche” at the “Tulskiye drevnosti” Museum explores the Battle of Kulikovo. In interactive areas, visitors can weave a piece of chain mail, try on armour and learn to read chronicle miniatures. Another exhibition at the same museum, “Sekrety tulskikh masterov”, features a pottery workshop, a blacksmith’s workshop and household objects from the 17th to 19th centuries.
The Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Estate also offers another perspective on Tula Oblast with a guided tour: from May to October, visitors can explore the central part of the estate with a guide. The tour covers Tolstoy’s favourite places for daily walks, the local flora and fauna, the history of the Tula defence lines and Tolstoy’s plantings. The exhibitions at “Tulskiye drevnosti” and the tour at Yasnaya Polyana thus offer different cultural perspectives within Tula Oblast.
