Breytovo’s history can be explored through exhibitions on Sitsky history, monuments and sacred memorial sites. Their varied themes can help you decide which aspects of local history interest you most when planning a culture-focused trip.

Breytovo at a glance

The Breytovo Local History Museum has exhibitions about life in the former Sitsky region and the Battle of the Sit. The Sitskiy nalichnik Museum is dedicated to the traditions of wooden architecture and folk art in the Breytovo area and opened on 8 July 2026.

Memorial and sacred sites include the monument to the first tractor drivers of Breytovo District, the memorial in Victory Park and the Bogoroditse-Nikolskaya Chapel. Construction of a new church in honor of the Nativity of John the Baptist began in autumn 2010.

What stories do the museums tell?

The Local History Museum presents two perspectives side by side. The exhibition on life in the former Sitsky region focuses on everyday culture in the past; “Sitskaya bitva,” by contrast, explores a specific medieval event, the Battle of the Sit. An interactive map and artistic depictions of the battle sites illustrate the period. This makes it easy to distinguish regional ways of life from the depiction of a particular battle.

The Sitskiy nalichnik Museum takes a different approach: it is dedicated to preserving the traditions of wooden architecture and folk art in the Breytovo area. While the Local History Museum focuses on historical subjects, this museum puts craftsmanship and artistic traditions at its center. If you are planning a museum visit, check opening hours and access in advance.

Which memorial sites shape Breytovo?

The monument to the first tractor drivers of Breytovo District is a Universal II. The tractor belonged to Vladimir Ivanovich Smelov, one of the district’s first tractor drivers. The dedication and the vehicle’s history link the monument to the development of agriculture in the district.

The memorial in Victory Park features white marble plaques bearing the names of people killed in the war in gold lettering, a star of the Eternal Flame and a sculpture of a soldier. Its design brings together names, a flame symbol and a figurative depiction of a soldier.

The Bogoroditse-Nikolskaya Chapel is considered Russia’s first chapel dedicated to the Leushino Icon of the Mother of God. It was conceived as a memorial to lost holy sites. Construction of the new church in honor of the Nativity of John the Baptist began in autumn 2010; it is regarded as the successor to the destroyed church and as continuing its traditions.

Another memorial site was a stele by the then building of the district executive committee. It bore the names of local people who died in the Great Patriotic War. On 9 May, rallies and the laying of flowers and wreaths were held there. This earlier form of remembrance differs from the description of the memorial in Victory Park.

How can you experience local history?

A guided tour offered by the Breytovo Local History Museum covers the town’s past and present. This provides a different way to explore the area than visiting individual museums and monuments, focusing instead on Breytovo’s history as a whole. Ask the Local History Museum whether the tour is available on your preferred date.

Cultural context in Yaroslavl Oblast

Yaroslavl Oblast’s cultural landscape includes other historic places. In Pereslavl-Zalessky, the Transfiguration Cathedral dates from the 12th century; it is the city’s oldest church and the earliest surviving architectural monument of the Vladimir-Suzdal school. In Rybinsk, the museum-reserve is housed in the New Grain Exchange, built in 1912 to a design by Moscow architect A. V. Ivanov on the high bank of the Volga. These architectural and church histories add further perspectives on Yaroslavl Oblast to the themes of local history, craftsmanship and remembrance found in Breytovo.
