Izola – Beaches, Old Town and the Parenzana
Izola combines the coast, urban history and paths through the countryside. The town has eight beaches stretching over five kilometres; with a SUP, visitors can explore the coast of Izola and reach all eight beaches. In the Old Town, narrow streets and Mediterranean architecture shape the townscape.
Town and culture
At Izolana, Izola presents models of traditional boats, a restored Pasara boat, a scale model of Izola and a projection about the history of the town. Izolana also offers a one-hour guided tour of Izola’s fishing, maritime and shipbuilding traditions.
A guided tour through Izola’s Old Town conveys the town’s Venetian heritage and fishing traditions. Izola’s Tourist Information Centre provides visitors exploring independently with a town map and points out places that are particularly worth seeing.
Getting around
The former coastal road between Izola and Koper has now been developed as a cycle and walking path. The Parenzana running through Izola was formerly a narrow-gauge railway between Trieste and PoreÄŤ and is now the Health and Friendship Route (D6 or D8). The Parenzana, or Health and Friendship Route, running through Izola has a medium difficulty level of 3/5 and is suitable for mountain biking because of its predominantly wooded paths and gravel roads.
A half-day hike from Izola into the surrounding countryside offers views across the heart of Istria to the sea, as well as of the Alps and the Dolomites. Alongside the coastal path, this places a named route with a stated difficulty level and a hike into the surrounding countryside at the centre of the landscape around Izola.
Local life
Refuscus Mundi – World of Refusco – takes place every year in Izola in Manzioli Square and Manzioli Palace and is dedicated to wines made from the Refusco grape variety. The seasonal market „Ruba sz moje njive“ gives local farmers in Izola the opportunity to sell their produce.
