Ravne na Koroškem: Hotels, Forma viva and Cycle Routes

Ravne na Koroškem showcases a distinctive cultural side through the steel sculptures of Forma viva. Ravne Sports Park is located in the natural surroundings of the town and the Meža Valley, between Peca and Uršlja gora.

Culture

The steel sculptures of Forma viva are one of Ravne na Koroškem’s attractions. They were created at nine international sculptors’ symposiums held between 1964 and 2014. A total of 36 sculptures were installed in the urban areas of Ravne na Koroškem, Prevalje, Mežica and Črna na Koroškem. During “S punklom po Formi vivi!”, visitors explore the Forma viva sculptures spread throughout the town while enjoying a snack.

Since 30 November 2016, the museum exhibition at Ravne Castle has featured a permanent exhibition about the creation of the Ravne collection of outdoor sculptures. This collection was conceived in 1964 as part of the national cultural event, the International Sculptors’ Symposium Forma viva. Since April 2005, the chapel of Ravne Castle has also housed a permanent exhibition of Roman stone monuments from the archaeological site of Zagrad near Prevalje, as well as individual stones from the municipality of Ravne na Koroškem. The Roman cemetery presented in the lapidarium of Ravne Castle dates from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

The surrounding area is home to the historic Turške šance earthworks, hidden in a forest above Kotlje. A small, overgrown island lies in their centre.

Nature

The Mladinska pot Ravne na Koroškem and the Pot na Šteharski vrh route are set in the natural surroundings of the Meža Valley. The Mladinska pot Ravne na Koroškem is an educational recreational trail for those seeking nature and relaxation. At 14 recreational learning stations, it also provides information about the period when fitness trails were created. The Pot na Šteharski vrh route is very well marked throughout and runs along both forest paths and meadows.

Hiking

The starting point of the Pot na Šteharski vrh hiking route is at the bus stop in Ravne na Koroškem. Another trail is the Malgajeva pot: it starts at the cultural centre in Ravne na Koroškem, follows a forest road towards Javornik and ends at Trg in Ravne na Koroškem. The Ravenska čebelarska pot is an easy route that can be walked or cycled.

The Planinsko društvo Ravne na Koroškem association organises the “Čez goro k očetu” hiking march every year in the second half of December. In even-numbered years, it takes place at night; in odd-numbered years, during the day. For the night march, hikers meet in Ravne na Koroškem in the evening.

Cycling

Ravne na Koroškem offers a variety of route types for cycling tours. The PICIKL KOŠTA cycling route has an easier 20-kilometre option and a more demanding 25-kilometre option. As a culinary cycling route, PICIKL KOŠTA starts in the castle park in Ravne na Koroškem. The circular tour explores Ravne na Koroškem and its surroundings and introduces traditional Koroška dishes made with fresh, high-quality local ingredients.

Poseka Bike Park has two cycling trails, which can be used free of charge. Those wishing to compare routes can obtain cycling and hiking maps from the TIC Ravne.

Sports

Ravne Sports Park includes a municipal outdoor swimming pool with an Olympic-size pool, an indoor winter pool, a modern athletics stadium, sports grounds and sports halls, as well as a tennis centre.
