Rogatec: Open-Air Museum, Mansion and Hotels

Rogatec turns its attention to cultural history, which is visible in its architecture and preserved townscapes. The Rogatec Open-Air Museum preserves the sub-Pannonian folk architecture typical of the Obsotelje area from the 19th century to the mid-20th century. It is Slovenia’s largest open-air museum and also a cultural monument of national importance.

Culture and history

One of the notable historic sites is Strmol Mansion. The mansion was first mentioned in 1436: at that time, the Counts of Cilli granted Jakob Strmol from Cerklje na Gorenjskem a tower near Rogatec. Its strong Baroque influence, with stucco, frescoes and attractively painted façades, makes Strmol Mansion one of Slovenia’s significant feudal buildings.

The preserved medieval market centre of Rogatec is also considered a cultural monument. Its layout comprises a central rectangular market square and a parallel service street behind the eastern row of market buildings.

Experiences

The Rogatec Open-Air Museum combines its preserved architecture with organised tours, demonstrations and hands-on ethnological workshops for young people and adults. Strmol Mansion hosts concerts, themed tours, theatrical scenes from the Baroque period, craft workshops and exhibitions. The cultural programme therefore encompasses various forms of engagement rather than being limited to viewing the buildings.

On Saturdays, Strmol Mansion offers free hands-on craft workshops for families and individual visitors. Admission to the mansion requires an entrance ticket. In Rogatec, visitors can explore independently or with a guide.

Another activity is called Herbalist for a Day. The experience offered in Rogatec combines an encounter with nature and the production of your own herbal products. It focuses both on spending time in nature and on hands-on work with the products made from it.

Nature

In the surroundings of Rogatec, a roughly 600-metre-long, easy trail on Donačka Gora offers a self-guided forest-bathing experience on the edge of a beech primeval forest. The trail begins at Rudijev Dom and initially follows a marked mountain path towards Čermožiše. The approximate length of around 600 metres remains an estimate; what is described is an easy trail with self-guided instructions for forest bathing.

Getting there

Rogatec can be reached by train from Celje, Šentjur, Grobelno, Šmarje pri Jelšah, Stranje and Rogaška Slatina. Long-distance bus connections are also available from Rogaška Slatina, Šmarje pri Jelšah, Celje and surrounding towns. Both trains and long-distance buses are therefore available for the journey.
