Istiqlol Square in central Dushanbe covers 30 hectares. The Ramzi Istiqlol complex is located in the centre of the square, is shaped like a tree of life and is crowned with a crown. Ustod Rudaki Culture and Recreation Park covers 19.67 hectares. Iram is Tajikistan’s Central Botanical Garden and extends over 40 hectares.

One prominent cultural site is the Kokhi Navruz complex. It consists of 12 halls; more than 40,000 m² of horizontal and vertical surfaces are decorated with patterns, stained glass, wood carvings and stucco work. This means that the focus is not only on the size of the complex, but also on the variety of its craftsmanship.

The Sadriddin Ayni House Museum offers a different historical perspective. The museum opened in 1978 on the occasion of the writer’s 100th birthday. Sadriddin Ayni lived and worked in this house from 1951 to 1954. For travel planning, this creates a distinct focus within the cultural offerings: alongside representative sites and large building complexes, there is also a place associated with the life and work of a single literary figure.

The National Museum of Tajikistan reaches far back in time: its oldest object is more than one million years old. At the National Museum of Antiquities, by contrast, a single particularly large exhibit takes centre stage. A 13-metre-long clay Buddha in Nirvana, dating from the 7th to 8th century AD, is on display there.

The Ethnographic Museum of Tajikistan takes a different approach. The second exhibition area covers traditional clothing, folk crafts, occupations, beliefs, rituals and local traditions.

Ustod Rudaki Culture and Recreation Park expands the selection with a large park area. Iram combines a botanical collection and garden grounds across 40 hectares. In addition, the Choykhonai Milli teahouse with 180 seats is located in the Botanical Garden. The parks therefore represent not only green spaces, but also different forms of spending time: a garden visit, recreation and a dining venue are separately identifiable among the documented offerings.

Outside Dushanbe, in the surrounding region, Hissar Fortress is located 26 km from Dushanbe. It consists of a fortified fort with two madrasas, a mausoleum built later and a large inner courtyard. The distance and the described complex make it an independent historical point of reference alongside the cultural sites within Dushanbe.
