Quick facts about Poltava Oblast

  • The 2024 regional environmental report lists Pyriatyn National Park as one of two national parks in Poltava Oblast.
  • Almost half of Pyriatyn National Park consists of valuable wetlands.
  • Nyzhnosulskyi National Park is used for water tourism as well as recreational and sport fishing.
  • The region’s cultural offerings include museums in Opishnia and Poltava, as well as the Bilsk hillfort.

What landscapes define the national parks?

In Pyriatyn National Park, patches of woodland, steppes, and meadows alternate with the winding course of the Uday. Wetlands cover almost half of the park’s area. For nature lovers, this creates a landscape where open spaces and water-shaped habitats lie side by side.

Nyzhnosulskyi National Park offers a different river landscape: the Sula flows through meadows and reed beds there. Downstream, it branches into numerous channels, forming islands and shallow-water areas. Hay meadows and pastures border wetlands along the river. Comparing the two parks, you’ll find different descriptions: Pyriatyn is characterized by its varied landscapes and the Uday, while Nyzhnosulskyi is defined by the Sula, with its channels, islands, and shallow banks.

What trails and activities do natural attractions offer?

A 2024 regional government publication puts the eco-tourism routes in Pyriatyn National Park at almost 280 kilometers. One specific example is the “Podorozh do ozera Sudevske” ecological trail in Nyzhnosulskyi National Park, near the village of Khudoliivka. It is three kilometers long and has nine stops along the full route; a shorter version of the trail is also available.

The Onishkivska ecological trail in the Romanchyk area has eight stops. A guide introduces visitors to the area’s history and the diversity of its flora and fauna. Guided tours in the “Battlefield of Poltava” protected area are available in Ukrainian and English. Water tourism as well as recreational and sport fishing are among the activities in Nyzhnosulskyi National Park. Nature lovers can therefore choose from landscapes and educational trails to activities on the water and fishing.

Which cultural sites are worth a look?

Gogol National Museum-Reserve, and the “Battlefield of Poltava” State Historical and Cultural Reserve.

The “Battlefield of Poltava” protected area displays historical artifacts, including edged and firearms, paintings, portraits, icons, prints, battle flags, uniforms, old books, and maps. The Bilsk hillfort in Bilsk is an archaeological monument of national importance. It is open to visitors, who can also explore its impressive fortifications.
