Culture

The archaeological collection of the Savitsky Museum comprises more than 15,000 objects and illustrates the cultural history of Karakalpakstan from the Bronze Age to the end of the 14th century. The State Museum of History and Culture of the Republic of Karakalpakstan in Nukus has more than 65,000 exhibits, organised into the departments of nature, archaeology and ethnography, and modern history. Its archaeological department displays artefacts and models of ancient Khorezm settlements. Fossils and specimens of rare or extinct birds and animals from the Aral Sea region can also be seen there.

The Manuscript Hall of the Berdakh National Museum contains written testimonies in Arabic, Persian and Turkic. The Berdakh National Museum also displays national jewellery and clothing, household items and archaeological finds. The Amet and Ayimkhan Shamuratov House Museum displays photographs, books, documents, portraits and concert posters associated with the couple. It also contains folk handicrafts such as carpets, household items and jewellery. The Ayimkhan Lapizi dance and ethnographic ensemble is affiliated with this house museum. The Centre for Handicraft Development of the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan works in the fields of carpet weaving, embroidery and yurt furnishings. It runs training programmes led by leading craftsmen from Karakalpakstan and Uzbekistan. Azatbay Otarbayev’s music workshop in Nukus specialises in traditional musical instruments and produces more than 15 types of string, wind and percussion instruments. The Karakalpak yurt located in the Ok-Kush complex in Nukus is described as the world’s largest non-dismantlable yurt; it has a diameter of 40.5 metres and is 22 metres high.

The exhibition hall of the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan hosts more than 20 art exhibitions annually, as well as master classes, competitions and festivals. In Nukus, it is located at 52A Uzbekistan Avenue.

The State Karakalpak Youth Theatre was founded in 1978 and opened with the play “Eglengen báhár”. It stages classical works by local and foreign playwrights. The State Berdakh Academic Musical Theatre of Karakalpakstan is located on E. Alakoz Street in Nukus and stages creative performances.

Geographical Location

Nukus lies on the right bank of the Amu Darya. The southern and eastern outskirts of Nukus border the vast sandy expanses of the Kyzylkum Desert. Nukus International Airport serves as an air gateway to Karakalpakstan. The Mizdakhan necropolis complex comprises mausoleums, fortifications, a caravanserai, a madrasa and other burial structures.
