Tourism in Central Asia

Central Asia comprises the former Soviet republics of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Although Central Asia is an extremely interesting region, it remains largely undeveloped for tourism. Trips to the countries of Central Asia are usually guided tours, for example following the route of the famous Silk Road.

The landscape of Central Asia is predominantly desert, so travel to these countries is recommended above all for adventurous holidaymakers. Since the summers in this region are extremely hot, the ideal time to visit is from April to June and from September to October. Central Asia is, however, an ancient cultural region—the cradle of great civilizations that have shaped the course of history.

Turkmenistan is home to numerous ancient sites and a bizarre desert landscape. It also boasts several natural wonders, including the world’s largest saltwater waterfall, a subterranean thermal lake and the burning craters of Darvaza.

Tourism in Uzbekistan is currently focused almost entirely on the famous Silk Road, which runs through the country. The ancient cities of Bukhara, Khiva and Samarkand are among Uzbekistan’s main attractions.

The other countries of Central Asia still have very limited infrastructure, which greatly impedes the development of tourism. We can only hope that the situation will improve in the future, as there is plenty to see in every country in Central Asia. We will keep you up to date on developments in tourism and, in particular, on efforts to open these countries up as travel destinations. The countries themselves are making a considerable effort to attract Western tourists, for example by presenting themselves at ITB.
