Kazan Airport
Since 1985, Kazan Airport (IATA: KZN) has been an international airport. The airline "Tatarskiye Avialinii" ("Tatar Airlines") is based on its grounds. The airport is located about 30 kilometers outside the million-strong city of Kazan.
Kazan’s current international airport is already the second airport serving the Tatar capital. The decision to build a second airport was made back in 1972, during the Soviet era. By then, the old Kazan-1 Airport was already too small for the approximately 1.5 million passengers it handled each year. The “new” airport—Kazan-2—opened in 1979. However, the first international flight from Kazan Airport did not depart until 1987, when it flew to Berlin.
Airport modernization through 2005
It is worth noting that Kazan Airport has, of course, since been further expanded and renovated. New lighting and weather equipment was installed on the runway. A series of improvements and expansion projects was completed in 2005 to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the city of Kazan. Key projects included expanding the airport terminal, modernizing the fuel system, and building a new 3,750 m runway for Kazan Airport. Airspace is monitored using a system made by the French company "Thomson". Today, the airport has a new terminal building and comfortable passenger facilities. The new airport building has a total area of about 30,000 m². Kazan Airport can handle around 690 passengers per hour, including 100 at an ultramodern “Business Terminal.”
Airlines across the CIS
The airlines serving Kazan Airport read like a “who’s who” of air travel in the CIS: Aeroflot, Bugulma Air Enterprise, Kazan Air Enterprise, Kuban Airlines, Rossiya Airlines, S7 Airlines, Tatarstan Airlines, UTair, and Uzbekistan Airways. Germany’s Lufthansa operates scheduled flights from Kazan to Frankfurt twice a week. Local airlines connect Kazan with Istanbul and cities in Central Asia. There are also charter flights to Thailand, the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, and cities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Its favorable geographical location makes it possible to connect the capital of Tatarstan by air with Russia’s largest cities. The flight from Kazan to Moscow takes 1.5 hours, and the flight to Saint Petersburg takes about 3.5 hours. Driving from central Kazan to the airport takes 30 minutes.
