With the release of «Marching Powder» book by Rusty Young published in 2003, tourist popularity of the Bolivian prison San Pedro in La Paz, which occupies the third place in ranking, had risen dramatically. San Pedro prison rightly bears the title of the strangest prison of the Americas. The prisoners, among whom are children, are obliged to fully pay for their own stay in detention: everything from food and clothing to detention cells. San Pedro is also unique because tours to the dark dungeons are not quite official and tourists can try all the "charms" of staying in the real functioning prison.

Travelers can stay in the chambers of the former Australian prison to spend the night on the pine planks and has extremely inexpensive dinner in the real prison canteen.
