Elbasan presents Albanian history in tangible places: Elbasan Castle is one of Albania’s significant historical and architectural monuments. Within its walls lies a historic residential quarter with narrow cobblestone streets and buildings of architectural value. Inside the castle, original paving stones from the Via Egnatia are also displayed for visitors.
Culture
An important place for regional history is the Ethnographic Museum of Elbasan. It preserves and presents the tangible and intangible heritage of this region; around 80 types of traditional crafts are displayed there. The museum is located in the city center, near the Bezistan plain, thereby connecting its collection with a central urban setting.
The Basilica of Tepe is also among the historical sites. It is designated as a first-category cultural monument. The Paleo-Christian archaeological site dates from the 4th to the 5th century and is located on Tepe Hill west of Elbasan. The Paleo-Christian basilica is also designated as a cultural monument and is a protected archaeological site.
Further evidence from different eras can be found throughout the city. The Pazar Bath, also known as the Bazaar Hamam, is a public monument of Ottoman architecture in Elbasan and was built in the second half of the 15th century. Inside the castle, next to the King’s Mosque, stands the Clock Tower. It was originally built at the end of the 18th century.
Landscape
Elbasan lies in the valley of the Shkumbin River on the Elbasan Plain. This geographical location is as much part of the character of the place as the historic buildings within the city. Via Egnatia routes run through the Municipality of Elbasan and can be traversed on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike.
Events
Elbasan Castle is used as a tourist venue for cultural events, exhibitions and festivals focused on local cultural identity. It therefore represents not only historic architecture, but also events connected with cultural life in the area.
The Skampa Theater has a role of its own. Dramatic premieres, comedies, tragedies and other stage performances take place there. Since the late 1990s, with a new format introduced in 1999, the Skampa Theater Festival has been one of Albania’s most important theater events, bringing theater ensembles from Albania, Europe, the Balkans and beyond to Elbasan.
Cuisine
A sweet treat also carries the city’s name beyond its borders: Ballakume is a traditional dessert originating in Elbasan. Ballakume is closely associated with the traditional Summer Day festival on March 14. Its preparation is part of the celebrations marking the arrival of spring and summer, linking the regional specialty with a fixed date in the festival calendar.
