Lushnjë is located in western central Albania, in the heart of the Western Lowland, on an extensive plain connected to the Adriatic coastal areas and the main cities of central Albania. The Congress Museum of Lushnjë is housed in the building where the Congress of Lushnjë met from January 21 to 31, 1920.

Location

Due to its geographical location and well-developed transport network, Lushnjë is considered easily accessible and an important connecting point in the region. At the same time, the fertile lowlands and the town’s close connection with agriculture shape its character. They create favorable conditions for agritourism and rural tourism. Visitors can discover local products, traditional cuisine and experiences connected with agricultural life.

Culture

The Congress Museum is located in the heart of the city and preserves the building’s old urban architecture. The Congress House was built in the first half of the 19th century and features a two-story design in the style of advisory houses. It opened as a house museum on January 21, 1960. Its rooms contain original documents, historical photographs and objects commemorating the delegates and the developments of that period. The museum offers an educational historical visitor experience.

The Congress of Lushnjë took place in the city in 1920 and is associated with the consolidation of the Albanian state and national institutions. The Historical Museum of Lushnjë, by contrast, documents local history from antiquity through the 1980s. It preserves around 2,000 objects, including archaeological remains, Neolithic objects and ethnographic artifacts. The collection also includes materials on local traditions, rural life, agrarian reform, education and healthcare. The Historical Museum was officially inaugurated on November 21, 1990.

History

Lushnjë’s historical traces reach far back into the past. The earliest object discovered in the city area dates from the Chalcolithic period. In the Kadri Qystri neighborhood, traces of a settlement from the Illyrian city period were discovered in 1989. Traces of an early basilica and numerous pottery fragments have also come to light in Lushnjë. Experts date the construction of the basilica to approximately the 4th to 6th century AD.

Another memorial site is the Memorial to Political Persecution in Lushnjë. Participants from Tirana and other participants who joined the tour directly in Lushnjë met there. Flowers were laid in memory of the victims and those who were politically persecuted during the communist dictatorship.

Nature

The area around Lushnjë also combines landscapes with historical sites. Lake Kasharaj is 2 km from Lushnjë and lies in the Karbunarë administrative unit. A bridge dating from the 12th to 13th century is located nearby and remains passable to this day. Lake Gjyshaj is 15 km from Lushnjë, in the Ballagat administrative unit, in a picturesque landscape near the Darsia hills. Lake Kupas is also 15 km away. It belongs to the Hysgjokaj administrative unit and is used for fishing and picnics.

Another historical destination is the Church of Krutje. It is located near the Lushnje–Fier road and can be reached by small cars and buses.
