Culture and History

The ancient city area of Apollonia covers approximately 120 hectares and is enclosed by around 4.5 kilometers of fortification walls. Apollonia Archaeological Park is located approximately 12 kilometers from Fier on a hilly plateau overlooking the Myzeqe Plain and the Adriatic. It preserves the Odeon, the library, the portico, mosaic villas, the Monastery of Saint Mary, and a Byzantine church from the 14th century. Apollonia was an important point along the trans-Balkan Via Egnatia.

Byllis Archaeological Park is located on the Fier–Tepelenë national road, 1.5 kilometers from the village of Hekal. Byllis stands on a hilltop plateau at an elevation of 547 meters above sea level and overlooks the Vjosa River valley. The city was founded between 370 and 350 BC and became the capital of the community of the Byllines. Byllis included an agora with a theater, stoa, stadium, gymnasium, temples, and other public buildings.

Inside the 7 churches of Karavasta, visitors can see preserved icons and carved walls. Ardenica Monastery is an Orthodox monastery from the 13th century, approximately 18 kilometers south of Fier; it was founded in 1282. It contains sacred frescoes painted by the Zografi brothers, while the surrounding area offers panoramic views over Lake Karavasta and the fields of Mallakastra. The medieval stone fortress of Cfiri Castle is a Category I cultural monument in Mallakastër in Fier District.

Libofshë has 15 churches, four of which are state-protected cultural monuments. The Bylis Theater in Fier was founded in 1971 and hosts performances, premieres, and festivals. The Vilson-Kilica Art Gallery in Fier presents exhibitions of painting, sculpture, and contemporary art.

Nature and Coast

Divjakë–Karavasta National Park covers more than 22,000 hectares and combines lagoons, coastal pine forests, sandy beaches, marshes, and salt flats. It is an internationally protected area and is included on the list of the Ramsar Convention. The coastal pine forest of Divjaka has natural trails for walking and cycling.

Divjaka Beach stretches for approximately 15 kilometers and offers fine sand as well as calm, clear water; it is also associated with family holidays and ecotourism. Pelican Island is closed to the public. However, its breeding colony can be viewed from observation towers and during boat tours in the vicinity.

The Seman River is formed by the confluence of the Devoll and Osum near Kuçovë and flows into the Adriatic after approximately 85 kilometers. Libofshë lies on the Seman and has around 8 kilometers of Adriatic coastline nearby, including Ndërnenas Beach for seaside activities.

Roshnica is a typical dish from Fier: small pieces of lamb are served with fresh salad and local herbs. In the coastal areas near Fier, fresh fish and seafood are important components of the local cuisine.
