Shëngjin: Beach, Lagoon and Nature on Albania’s Adriatic Coast

Shëngjin combines the Adriatic coast with diverse landscapes and activities. Shëngjin Beach is located on the Adriatic coast, around 6 km northwest of Lezhë. It offers various water sports activities and has well-developed tourist infrastructure with hotels, restaurants and bars. Parasailing is permitted one mile from the shore at Shëngjin Beach. Fishing activities are also well developed in the beach area. The Port of Shëngjin is intended exclusively for raw materials.

Coast and Landscape

One of the distinctive coastal landscapes is Rana e Hedhun. The area is classified as a natural monument and is also a beach with sand dunes. The largest dune is located on the mountain slope and reaches a height of up to 80 m. Rana e Hedhun is a destination for hikes and adventure activities such as climbing the dunes. The focus here is therefore not only on the beach, but also on the distinctive shape of the dune landscape.

Kune Beach lies on the coast of Shëngjin near the lagoon of the same name. It offers a peaceful landscape among tall pine trees. The beach includes a small island separated from the shore by a river-like waterway. The managed nature reserve “Kune–Vain–Tale–Patok–Fushëkuqe–Ishëm” is also located very close to Shëngjin.

Along the Way

The panoramic balcony on the new road from Shëngjin to Velipojë is located on Mount Renci. It has parking spaces for stops during which visitors can enjoy the view and relax. Visitors often stop there for short breaks and to enjoy the cool mountain air. The viewpoint thus combines the route of the road with a clearly defined place for a stopover.

Nature

The Kune-Vain Lagoon is located in the vicinity of Shëngjin, southwest of Shëngjin near the mouth of the Drin. The lagoon encompasses lagoons, forests, swamps, islands and unspoiled beaches. It is home to more than 200 species of waterbirds, including flamingos and Dalmatian pelicans. In the vicinity of Shëngjin, day trips to the Kune-Vain Lagoon offer environmental education and the opportunity to explore wildlife.

History and Information

Shëngjin is also associated with the historical name Nympheum. In 48 BC, Marcus Antonius landed at Nympheum (Shëngjin) to support Julius Caesar in the Battle of Dyrrachium against Pompey. A tourist information office called “Infopoint” is located in Shëngjin on Wilson Promenade.
