Pogradec on Lake Ohrid – Hotels, Nature and Culture

Pogradec lies on the shore of Lake Ohrid and combines a protected lake landscape with historic sites, regional culture and events. Lake Ohrid, also known as Lake Pogradec, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region”; the Albanian part was added to this site in 2019. In the regional context, the terrestrial and aquatic protected landscape area of Pogradec, established by law in 1999, protects the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems throughout the entire World Heritage area and its buffer zone.

Nature and the Lake

The waters of Lake Ohrid, surrounded by greenery and majestic mountains, offer opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing and birdwatching. Five kilometres east of Pogradec and near the tourist village of Tushemisht lies Drilon, a karst spring. Drilon is easily accessible by car, bicycle or on foot. Nearby Drilon, visitors can go boating and relax amid the local flora and fauna.

History and Culture

Above the city stands Pogradec Castle, southwest of Lake Ohrid on a hill approximately 200 metres high. The structure is a Category I monument and only 700 metres from the city centre. The settlement at the castle dates back to the 5th century BC; in the 4th century BC, initially unfortified settlement areas were supplemented by defensive walls. The castle is accessible on foot or by car. The uphill road is challenging for ordinary vehicles, so a four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle is recommended.

The Historical Museum of Pogradec has been open since November 1964. Its archaeological and historical-ethnographic collections present the history of the Pogradec region from early Neolithic traces dating back approximately 8,000 years to the present day. The archaeological collection includes, among other things, parts of the pile beams from the Boqezë settlement, two Illyrian helmets, weapons, ceramic objects and bronze figures of the god Hermes. The ethnographic collection comprises jewellery, clothing and weapons passed down through generations in Pogradec families.

Pogradec’s old town is also known for its Ottoman and Balkan architecture. In the tourist village of Lin on the western shore of Lake Ohrid, about 20 kilometres from Pogradec, finds from the Iron Age and earlier periods indicate traces of an early European settlement. On the hill of Shën Thanasi in Lin also stands the Early Christian Basilica of Lin, a 6th-century AD structure known for its mosaics of significant historical and artistic value.

Trails and Regional Places

In Lin, a 5.56-kilometre nature trail allows visitors to explore the village, the Zagraqes area and the western part of the peninsula. This means that the area around the lake contains both a historic site and a designated route through the village, area and peninsula, with their respective focuses kept distinct.

Festivals and Cuisine

Pogradec celebrates Lake Day every year on 21 June. The programme includes exhibitions, outdoor painting, arts and crafts markets and music concerts. The event brings together citizens, tourists and representatives of neighbouring cities that share the same lakeshore area.

The Balkan Film and Culinary Festival is regarded as a tradition. It is credited with promoting authentic Albanian cultural, artistic and gastronomic values, as well as conveying Pogradec’s civic values in the Balkans and beyond. Over five days, around 50 short and feature-length films are shown, including animated and documentary films. The Koran Festival in Pogradec was accompanied by a food market where local chefs prepared Koran fish dishes and offered tastings to visitors.
