Sasaj – Coastal Trails, Olive Groves and the Southern Coastal Trail

Hiking between coast and pass

The Southern Coastal Trail includes the Piqeras–Sasaj–Lavani Pass section and runs as a hiking route between Piqeras, Sasaj and Lavani Pass. In Sasaj, the route passes the HEC Sasaj hydropower plant. It then turns into a gravel road and subsequently follows a pebble beach for 300 metres.

Landscape and village character

The coastal hiking trail through Sasaj follows an ascending old paved and unpaved road along a mountainside. This mountainside is home to terraced olive groves overgrown with ferns. The route also includes a scenic coastal section beside abandoned terraces on the way to Lukovë.

Sasaj is considered a small coastal mountain village overlooking the olive groves of Piqeras. The peaks of Maja e Lavanit, Maja e Lugjeve and Maja e Piksës are each located in the vicinity of Sasaj. Mount Mal Lucë is also located near Sasaj. From Lukovë, a mountain path may offer views of the stone-built village of Sasaj on the mountainside.

Coast and access

Sasaj Beach is located off the SH8 coastal road between Borsh and Lukovë; an access road leads towards the coast. A car is strongly recommended for Sasaj Beach, as the buses on the Saranda–Himara–Vlora route run along the SH8 above and do not stop at the beach. A paved lane connects Sasaj with the national road and was built during the Italian period.

Culture and history

The ruins of Hundëcovë, Ali Pasha Castle and Kalaja e Borshit Fortress are located in the vicinity of Sasaj. The ancient site of Phoinike is located in the wider regional area around Sasaj. Labe-polyphonic singing has also been documented in Sasaj. The geographical classification distinguishes between the vicinity of Sasaj and the wider regional area, so these details do not refer to the same geographical area.
