Awan contains the Karmir Sar (Tirinkatar) Vishapakar complex, a newly documented archaeological complex dating from the 4th to the 2nd millennium BC. It includes twelve dragon stones: eight in the shape of bulls and four in the shape of fish. The complex is located on the southern heights of Mount Aragats within the ancient Karmir Sar (Tirinkatar) site. Awan is home to the parish church of the Holy Mother of God, dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The parish church of the Holy Mother of God and the Church of Saint Hovhannes are listed as monuments in the Awan community. The Church of Saint Hovhannes is described as a ruin dating from the 5th to the 6th century. The grounds of both listed churches were improved as part of a monument preservation initiative.

Within the boundaries of the Awan community, caves with stone doors lie on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats. These caves associated with Awan date from the early and late medieval periods, were created in pre-existing caves, are described as monuments of great archaeological and historical importance, and served as hidden storage rooms for food.

Hiking and Tours

An easy hiking route to Awan includes a visit to its local early Christian church and covers 5 kilometers round trip. The route recommends that participants bring hiking shoes and hiking clothing.
