Culture

After an earlier wooden church burned down in 1654, construction of the brick Holy Trinity Church began in 1764. It was consecrated on July 11, 1783. During a renovation, its side aisles, transept, and sacristies were added, creating a three-aisled building. Its architecture combines features of the Baroque and Art Nouveau styles. The church contains the icon “The Assumption of the Virgin” and a statue of the “Suffering Jesus.”

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin is considered a valuable architectural monument of the 17th century and an early example of the Vilna Baroque school in Belarus. The Holy Trinity Church and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin are located close to each other in the historic center of Hlybokaye and form a distinctive architectural ensemble.

The preserved former residential building of the Basilian monastery belongs to a religious complex whose origins date back to the mid-17th century. From 1756 to 1763, a monumental stone ensemble was built there. The monument “Dedication to the Book” commemorates the Bible as the first printed book of Belarus. The stone Bible was installed in 2012, on the Day of Celebration of Belarusian Written Language, in September 17 Square between the Orthodox cathedral and the Catholic church.

History

The Hlybokaye Historical and Ethnographic Museum opened in December 1997 in the former city administration building, which is considered an architectural monument of the early 20th century. In seven exhibition halls, the museum presents the history of the Hlybokaye region. Its program includes thematic exhibitions, lectures, master classes and other cultural events, as well as informative excursions to historic sites in Hlybokaye and its surroundings.

Nature

A bus and walking route dedicated to the aquatic warbler leads through the surroundings of Hlybokaye to the republican hydrological reserve “Lake Serevich” and the habitats of the aquatic warbler. There, visitors can discover rare lowland bog landscapes and their distinctive flora and fauna; the aquatic warbler is described as Europe’s rarest songbird.

On the Way

The “Architectural Monuments of the Belarusian Lake District” route is approximately 36 km long and is designed as a one-day bus or car tour. It begins in Hlybokaye at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin; the first stop is the Holy Trinity Church.

In the surroundings of Hlybokaye, Lake Dolgoye is a stop on a cycling route through the major lakes of the Hlybokaye region. The lake is described as the deepest lake in Belarus.
