Odžak: Culture, Nature and Hotels in Posavina Canton

A permanent exhibition featuring wooden replicas of prehistoric vessels was opened in the Beledija. These replicas are modelled on examples of Kostolac culture pottery found at the Chalcolithic settlement of Pivnica in Potočani. The Pivnica archaeological site in Potočani is considered one of the most important Chalcolithic sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Religious buildings are also part of Odžak’s cultural character. The city’s first parish church was completed in 1908, while the present parish church was built between 1997 and 1999. Its towers feature four large stained-glass windows depicting religious scenes and figures: the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth, the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, Blessed Alojzije Stepinac, and the Servant of God John Paul II. Gradska džamija is located in the heart of Odžak’s Čaršija and is characterised by a slender minaret and harmonious architecture.

Posavsko kolo is a traditional folklore event in Odžak; its central feature is a folklore showcase. It includes a parade of folklore groups through the streets of Odžak and performances of traditional costumes, songs, and dances in the city’s pedestrian zone. Posavsko kolo also includes a Kulenijada.

Odžak is the birthplace of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian poet Musa Ćazim Ćatić. Musini Dani is held in his honour, a cultural and stage event organised in March. Another cultural event held annually in Odžak is Posavsko ljeto, organised by the Odžak Cultural Centre.

Regional products and handicrafts take centre stage at Mali sajam. The market presents local, traditional products, delicacies, and handicrafts from small producers, individuals, and associations. Mali sajam takes place on Odžak’s town promenade and was held there for the fourth consecutive time.

The Starača protected landscape belongs to the municipality of Odžak and covers 424.4 hectares within the municipal area. Starača is one of two protected landscape areas designated because of their exceptional importance for biodiversity. In addition to the buildings and events, a clearly identified landscape area is therefore also central to the town.

The Lovište Odžak hunting ground extends across the entire territory of the municipality of Odžak and is designated as a lowland hunting ground. The Sava is an important fishing area associated with Odžak.

Odžak’s municipal sports and recreation centre includes a football stadium with an auxiliary pitch, as well as sports courts for small-sided football or handball, basketball, and volleyball. The sports and recreation centre’s adjacent grounds also contain a sports hall and an Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool.

The various sites are therefore located in different areas of urban and municipal life: historic architecture and archaeological references stand alongside religious buildings, folklore events, regional products, sports facilities, and designated landscape and hunting grounds.
