Elhovo Municipality: Nature, Museum and Accommodation

• Balabana is located in the town of Elhovo and protects riparian forest and habitats of various heron species.

The 76.98-hectare Balabana Nature Reserve is located in the town of Elhovo. It includes flat riparian forests and habitats for various heron species. At 467.47 hectares, Dolna Topchia is considerably larger and lies in the village of Trankovo. There, too, riparian forest and the habitat of the Colchic pheasant are central to its conservation value. These descriptions do not guarantee wildlife sightings or unrestricted access to every part of a protected area.

The five-hectare Dranchi Dupka Natural Landmark, which protects a cave, is in Melnitsa. The 1,891.21-hectare Tundzha River Gorge stretches near Lesovo. The municipal source lists habitats there for 149 bird, eight amphibian, and 21 reptile species. These species counts describe the protected area; they do not mean that the animals must be visible on any one walk. The Tundzha River 2 habitat area covers a total of 5,948.72 hectares, including parts of the town of Elhovo and several villages in the municipality, including Granitovo, Izgrev and Kirilovo. The coverage is partial; the entire area of each village is not automatically protected.

Within the municipality, the Dervent Heights bird protection area extends into, among other places, Lalkovo. The Sakar habitat area protects other native species, including the Colchic pheasant. Protected status and a species list do not imply that there is a marked visitor trail; check access and suitable routes locally.

In Elhovo is the Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum, housed in two two-storey buildings dating from 1933 that were connected in the 1960s. One gallery presents agriculture, wine and tobacco growing, animal husbandry, hunting, fishing, and crafts around the turn of the 20th century. Another covers festivals and customs, including weddings, Lazaruvane, and Koledari. The museum is one of Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist sites. This is a classification, not a statement about current opening hours.

The Manastircheto–St. Iliya archaeological complex, with a Roman-era temple tholos, is in the area of Stroyno. The late antique and medieval Gradishte Fortress is in Melnitsa. A municipal report also documented the thirteenth edition of the “Banitsa vита – Twice Folded” Banitsa Festival in Elhovo; no future date can be inferred from this.

Accommodation near the town museum suits different day-trip plans than a location for excursions to Trankovo, Melnitsa, or Lesovo. Neither the municipality’s name nor a protected-area designation establishes a specific driving time, an open hiking trail, or available rooms.
