Stremtsi: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture

The gold mines of Stremtsi are known as the Stremtsi Labyrinths and are also called Inklers Cave. They contain a complex of underground galleries extending over several kilometres. Traces of ancient gold washing are visible in the mining complex.

The ancient gold mine near Stremtsi was declared an archaeological cultural monument in 1984. In academic research, the Stremtsi gold deposit is described as sedimentary mineralisation of the placer type.

About 1.7 km southeast of Stremtsi lies Karachalak Tepe, a fortified Thracian settlement. It included an almost circular citadel with a diameter of about 30 metres. Two or three earth and stone ramparts, as well as the foundations of a large round tower, have been preserved there.

Landscape

A relatively good unpaved road branches off from the road towards Murgovo and Perperikon and leads to Karachalak Tepe. On a hill east of the settlement in the surrounding area, there is a direct view of the Perperikon sanctuary.

The Perpereshka River runs near Stremtsi and flows into the Studen Kladenets Reservoir.

Getting There and Notes

Regular bus services connect Stremtsi with Kardzhali and the neighbouring villages. The gold mines are located about 200 metres from the Kardzhali–Haskovo main road, behind the small reservoir between Rani list and Stremtsi.

Visitors are advised not to enter the mine galleries without a guide who is familiar with their layout. The mine tunnels had not yet been secured for visitors.
